Going to a boxing gym helps many people start up convos and bets there
Does anyone else feel like a lonely boxing nerd?

Wonderful thread.
However, I'm kinda lucky in that I've roped in a lot of people into the sport.
I have basically used my Facebook (when I'm activated) as means of writing about boxing - I know it's not the best medium but at least using it as a boxing blog gives it a use. I like writing about boxing - it helps me get to grips with my relationship with it, increases my understanding of the sport if I am trying to capture a thought or idea relating to it, and it also allows me to promote the sport to people (for all of boxings ills, it's a truly magnificent sport at its best).
I've roped in about 10 people into the sport - 3 hardcore, the rest above what you would call a casual fan. All my family are into boxing now too. Sometimes I feel like I know how to promote the sport better than the damn promoters
Cos the thing you have to remember - people love boxing. There's a reason why it's such a historic sport with so many icons. The problem is access to it. The sport is tucked away on cable/PPV channels, so people just don't want to make the effort to get into it.
But give people some access - allow them to get familiar with all the backstories of the fighters, their personalities, their styles, their records - and people truly do become addicted to the sport. I've seen it first hand how it just gets under peoples skin, like it has ours.Comment

Luckily I have the internet :')
I got a guy in my class who wears a Pacquiao nike shirt and I asked if he knew who Pacquiao was.
He said that he only buyed the shirt because of the nike logoComment

I assume it's rare to find an educated boxing fan. It's pretty much a niche sport at this point and people take football and basketball much more seriously here in the U.S. Most people only know boxers from the past that they've heard over the years and maybe Mayweather and Pacquiao of boxers who are on their way out. Boxing is a dying sport in the U.S. amongst the casual crowd. People will watch it when they get a chance, but become emotionally disconnected from the sport and the boxers as soon as the match is over.Comment

Ha. I spent hours making a 2013 boxing highlight vid that has less than 200 views. I AM a lonely boxing nerd.Comment

I am the only one I know that really follows boxing but it's kind of alright because all the people that I know come to me to find out when the "big" fights are happening. "When is Mayweather fighting again? Who is he fighting? Are you getting the fight?" Same thing with Pac.
They probably know more about MMA and the sad thing is I don't really follow MMA and I likely know more about that than they do too.Comment
