Comments Thread For: Roach: Pacquiao and Cotto Will Not Spar in Camp

“Trainer of the Year” Freddie Roach, who was scheduled to leave on Monday to join ”Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao at his training camp in General Santos City disclosed that even if Miguel Cotto trains alongside Pacquiao - he will not spar with him.

Roach told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard on his arrival from Macau on Sunday that Cotto would train at the Pacman Wild Card Gym should Pacquiao decide to train in his hometown for four weeks which was the original plan. Otherwise, he said, if Pacquiao decides to leave for the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles earlier, Cotto would join him there.

I don't understand why not. Manny would be excellent sparring for Cotto to prepare for the Martinez fight.

My guess is probably because Cotto is a possible opponent for Pacquaio in the future. Think about it, if Pacquaio gets past Bradley, who else is there left for him to fight at Top Rank? And a fighter that can and will generate money? There's just Marquez, who isn't eager to fight him again.

Because both men have big bouts ahead of them and the last thing they'd want is for one guy to hurt the other or even remotely risk injury. Could you imagine having to cancel the two biggest bouts this year for Arum because of a sparring injury. That would be bad business, I would understand if these guys we spring chickens and could heal fast but they can't and aren't.

This doesn't make any sense, both fighters are still going to spar whether with it each other or other boxers and they can both sustain injuries. Sorry but your theory doesn't really add up.

Agreed. In my opinion, them not sparring has nothing to do with health.
