I honestly don't think that it's that far-fetched. In Al Haymon's stable who can really generate a name like Adonis Stevenson? He's a KO artist, HUGE in Canada and the lineal Light Heavyweight champion of the world. If he can keep this up, then his name only gets bigger. I think Adonis wants the Hopkins fight badly, I think Adonis will side-step Kovalev if his path of destruction continues.
If this "cold war" thing is still going on, Arreola hasn't fought on HBO since the HBO announced no more Golden Boy fighters and in essence Al Haymon fighters. Edwin Rodriguez signed with Haymon during Ward negotiations, he hasn't fought since that fight. Now Stevenson supposedly inked a 3-fight deal which was probably with the Bellew fight.
I won't be surprised after Fonfara if Stevenson decides to fight Pascal instead of Kovalev because of "money". To me, it doesn't mean Stevenson is scared to fight Kovalev but he's got to think about how much money he can make because he hit it big in the sport at the end of his career. I don't for-see a Kovalev fight in the near future.
Both men still have options out there to fight and Stevenson can make some big money in a Hopkins fight at the Barclays Center. So, I won't be surprised if Adonis Stevenson does duck Sergey Kovalev for the time being because it makes boxing sense from the business side.
If Steveson gets KO'd by Kovalev, then he loses future earnings, he wins that fight, it expands his profile but so does beating a Benard Hopkins and it's an easier fight. Personally, I think Stevenson would beat Kovalev but right now in Adonis' mind, the risk is far greater than the reward at this moment.
