I'm not trying to give you a hard time, I'm just honestly baffled at how you can say that Mayweather ducked an entire division when he only took a 16 month layoff - really 14 months if you consider the fact that he got injured in his training camp vs Marquez. You say that as if the man took 3+ years off.

You act as if Mayweather never ages and has a crystal ball that reads the future.Taking 16 months in between fights could have done more harm than good when you factor in ring rust and his age. Do you disagree?

Cotto is already on record saying that he never asked or lobbied for the fight and it was never brought to him by his promoter, so why would u blame Floyd for this???
Cotto never called out one fighter in his career. It's not his style to call anyone out; so that explains why he never called Floyd out in 08. Cotto didn't call Margarito, Mosley, Judah or anyone else out for that matter.

The reason the fight should've happened in 08 was because Mayweather had just beat Hatton and Cotto had just beat Mosley. The public wanted it; everyone and their momma wanted it right before Floyd's retirement. Floyd tried to get a rematch with DLH then retired.

The reason Floyd-Cotto didn't happen in 06 when they were stablemates was because Cotto was still green. He'd only been fighting for 4 years while Floyd was fighting for 10 at that time.

Also, Floyd's reasoning for not fighting Cotto upset me a lot back then:

      1. Cotto lives to far

      2. Not a big enough star

Etc.... There was no mention about Top Rank or Bob Arum being the problem like it is today with Pac-Mayweather. Nothing; no mention of it whatsoever. Only "Cotto's not a big enough star".

2008 made the most sense for the fight to happen, not 2005/2006 when Cotto was still green.

I give Floyd huge props for being able to have long layoffs and fight guys like jmm and Ortiz and make it look easy..

All I'm trying to do is point out that cotto, margs and Shane had seen better days by the time Floyd cameback..
No doubt Floyd in my mind that Floyd was pulling a Ray Leonard and waiting for guys to show some slowing before coming back...

Neither of us know exactly what he was thinking when he "retired", but the fact of the matter is that he didn't go after any of the 3 people that you're saying he ducked when he came back, which leads me to believe that he wasn't waiting for them to "soften up". He fought Marquez, and then went into negotiations with Pacquiao next. No need to rehash that, but it was only after the Pacquiao fight fell through that he then fought Mosley, who was coming off of demolishing Margarito. Its easy, in hindsight, to say that Mayweather waited until Mosley was old to fight him, but at the time there was no one calling Mosley old. In fact, people were still saying that Mayweather was "ducking" Mosley before he signed up to fight him.

I am not talking about "calling out" Cotto himself said he never asked for the fight. Never lobbied for the fight. NOTHING! So what does that say??

            1. Floyd was not working with Arum
            2. Ok, if u say that, then all the applies to Cotto as well. Why didn't he lobby for it? If you apply it to Floyd, u need to apply it to Cotto as well.

Yes and Floyd was fighting 2 years when he fought a guy that was fighting 14 years and only lost once to ODH. If Cotto is the warrior that everyone makes him out to be, why didn't he press for it regardless??

Floyd is partially to blame with the nonesense that he was saying, but that doesn't change the fact that it was never offered to Cotto and he never asked for the fight. PERIOD! Floyd should've just said "I dont want to work with Arum".

Ok, you are right, but again, if Floyd didn't want the fight, then Cotto certainly didn't either! I certainly don't think that Floyd retired so that he wouldn't need to fight Cotto. The guy wanted a freaking break, what's wrong with that! Who else in the division was fighting at such a high level for so long??

It applies to Floyd because Floyd was and has been his own boss. He has decided who he fights for the last 7 years or so.

It doesn't apply to Cotto because he has always been under the "I fight who they tell me to fight" slogan. I can say he's been consistent since I can remember.

Merchant asked Mayweather why doesn't he fight Cotto after the Hatton fight and Mayweather said he didn't want to call out no WW's and said he needed a break. Before that, all he did was call out WW's and reply to whoever he was asked about.

I have no problem with Floyd retiring, but he was in his late 20's at the time when the division was the hottest

Sorry, but that's some bull**** reasoning. If Arum never even brought up the idea of Cotto fighting Floyd to Cotto, what does that say?

You will blame Floyd because he has control, but you won't blame Cotto because he won't be a man and hides behind the "I fight who they tell me to fight" slogan? Cotto is just as much to blame for the fight not coming off as Floyd is. Arum works for Cotto, not the other way around. So if u blame one, you should blame the other!

Could it be that Floyd really did need a break. It seems like it since that's what he took.

Who else do you know that fought at such a high level dominating all their almost every fighter he faced for so long. I can't think of one other than Roy Jones. So, if he needed a break in his 20's, that means he had eat, slept, breathed boxing for since he was out of the cradle. I don't think a break was too much to ask.

Yes, that's the reason. Cotto has never hid behind anyone and has fought whoever he was asked to fight. Cotto was asked if he would fight Mayweather and he said, "yes, I'll fight whoever's in front of me". Mayweather was aksed if he would fight Cotto and he said "He isn't trying to call out any WW's, Cotto lives to far and isn't a big enough draw, needs a vaction/retirement".

At the time, Cotto fought the better 140 lb'ers and 147 lbers, so if anyone needed a break, it should've been Cotto.

Weak son. Floyd would fight whoever is in front of him too. That means nothing. You want to apply one standard to Floyd and another to Cotto. Getting the fighting in front of him is how you are judging Floyd. Saying the words and doing nothing about it is how you are judging Cotto.

Cotto needed a break after fighting as a pro for 4 years, but Floyd didn't need one after fighting as a pro for 11. Jeez you're showing your bias!

What you don't understand is Floyd wouldn't even entertain fighting Cotto regardless of who brought it up to him. He gave several answers on why he wouldn't fight Cotto. So it doesn't matter if it was Arum, Merchant or the fans that asked the question.

The answers changed and always ended with NO

Lastly, yes, if anyone needed a break, it was Cotto. Mayweather was fighting at most twice a year IF that. I lost count how much Cotto was fighting
