There is no doubt that Martinez is fast but he has definitely lost speed, based on his last few fights. Also what many people don't take into account is the fact that when a fast fighter fights a slow plotting fighter the fast fighter looks even faster. Martinez's speed is being overstated. Since moving up he has fought slow plotting fighters, who were all very similar to each other, with only the awkwardness of their individual boxing style to separate them. Starting from Pavlick all the way to Chavez Jr. Cotto is a vastly different opponent, also Cotto has fought faster fighters then Martinez and has done very well against them. On the other hand Martinez has never fought anyone like Cotto and if you look at the style of the 2 opponents and what they bring to the ring Martinez would look better against GGG then he will against Cotto (not saying he will beat GGG), mainly because GGG is a flat footed fighter who operates on 1 rhythm, while Cotto has proven he is extremely hard to time, example: it took Mayweather 11-12 rounds to finally time Cotto coming in and some of that was due to Cotto fading, and lets not kid ourselves, Mayweather is probably one of the best in history at timing opponents.
And for those who bring up Trout as an example, lets be real. Trout and Martinez are on two opposite ends of the spectrum. Trout has a solid long jab and is a defensive fighter, Martinez hardly jabs and rarely defends. Martinez relies on his athleticism to evade and that's going to be difficult to do against a fighter who's adept at cutting the ring off like Cotto, not to mention the ring will probably be smaller then Martinez would like. Also like Roy Jones said, fighters on Cotto's level find it hard to get up and train for fighters like Trout, Cotto looked out of shape, under trained and he came in with a defensive game plan when he should have been attacking.
My OPINION is that both fighters have an equal chance of winning, how ever I think Cotto wins. I just think Roach is a master game planner, and cotto jabs to well and cuts off the ring on Martinez, remaining in his chest for large portions of the fight forcing Martinez to trade. stoppage from 7-10th round or a 2-3 point win on the score cards. Also I think Martinez will re-injure himself evading Cotto's pressure. Like i said the fight could go either way, because as history shows no fighter has ever had an easy night against Cotto.lol

Martinez rarely jabs? He threw a ridiculous number of jabs in the Chavez fight. And Martinez and Trout do have some similarities. You act like Martinez is just going to run from Cotto all night. If he and Cotto were to both stand their ground and trade, Martinez would likely get the better of it. So how can Cotto win? Pressuring Martinez is a recipe for disaster because Martinez will do what Trout did and counter Cotto. He can't outbox Martinez because of the height and reach. There's no reason to believe Cotto can hurt Martinez. How is a fighter who is undersized at 154 going to hurt a fighter who's been taking punches from guys probably weighing around 180? You guys are acting like Cotto is a relentless power punching beast. He may have been at 140, but at 154, he hasn't had the power or size to fight that style successfully against top fighters. At 160, Cotto will be way undersized.
