Many people who don't have a direct connection to the island believe Castro was good for Cuba. Once, I, too, believed the theory. But after careful study, both through books and personal interviews with many Cuban friends and family, I came to view Castro as more of a destroyer than a creator. The romance of the revolution died long ago. "Che" really believed in it, and even Castro probably believed in it; but, as they say, absolute power corrupts absolutely. There's just no way communism can succeed in the real world, partly because it invariably involves the control of one despot, er "leader," and his small band of henchmen.
While it's true that Cuba's poor probably have a better standard of living than many of the destitute around the world, it's also true that there is no wealth. I would rather be born poor, and have the chance at a better standard of living, than be born poor and have no expectation of ever rising above my lot. What do I care if the next guy is poor just like me? It's a culture of misery.
