Why would Golovkin have to move up in weight to catch up to someone who hasn't done so himself?

Because except for Martinez, I'm not sure if there are fighters at middleweight as good as the super middleweights Ward beat. Then again, while middleweight has less overall quality at the top than super middleweight did during the Super Six, it has more quantity.

It would be a terrific win, but it would not be enough to catch up to Ward. While it would be better than any individual win of Ward's, Ward has repeatedly dominated world class fighters of many different styles. Golovkin would need to fight more world class fighters. And he'd need to show that he can handle many different styles. Beating Quillin wouldn't mean much, because Quillin is an unproven paper champion. Beating Sturm would be helpful. To catch up to Ward, Golovkin would need guys like Martinez, Sturm, Murray, Geale, and some super middleweights.

Was about to comment on the same thing but AVDB beat me to the punch. Beating all the middleweights noted would put him on par if not slightly ahead or behind - all debatable. Regardless, GGG should definitely not need to fight Super-Middleweights, that is unfair on him to 'catch' up to Ward.
