Martinez beats former super lightweight in Cotto and then GGG fights this geriatric Martinez who already had his chin shattered by Chavez and that will actually be his best fight. That is a horrible resume for a 32 year old
To be fair all the top mw's are avoiding him.

This fight won't happen if Martinez beats Cotto, he'll get Mayweather or at least Canelo. But Martinez is not getting past Cotto and that is the reason this fight will get made, it's a name win for Golovkin and Sergio should he win (no way in hell) would be able to redeem himself.

OK, let's say the following happens:

Cotto beats Martinez, remains at the weight

GGG gets 2 more good wins or so

GGG and Cotto fight - Who wins? Most would say GGG I assume, yet they would also probably go with GGG over Martinez due to Sergio's age and injury history - yet the majority will also go for Martinez to beat Cotto?

Cotto hasn't shown anything to suggest he could beat Martinez. If guys like Chavez Jr. and Pavlik couldn't knock Martinez out, it is highly doubtful that the much smaller and weaker Cotto can. Remember, Cotto couldn't be Trout. Martinez is a southpaw, like Trout. He moves more than Trout. And he makes great use of the left uppercut and straight to the body, which Mayweather and Trout used to great effect against Cotto. Martinez is also the hardest puncher Cotto will have ever faced. If Cotto got dropped twice by Pacquiao, what do you think Martinez will do to him?

Would Golovkin have caught up to Ward if he KO'd Martinez? Or would he need to fight Quillin and/or Felix Sturm too?

The win against Sergio would make him the WBC champ, The Ring and would be lineal champion along with his WBA, IBO titles.

It would be a terrific win, but it would not be enough to catch up to Ward. While it would be better than any individual win of Ward's, Ward has repeatedly dominated world class fighters of many different styles. Golovkin would need to fight more world class fighters. And he'd need to show that he can handle many different styles. Beating Quillin wouldn't mean much, because Quillin is an unproven paper champion. Beating Sturm would be helpful. To catch up to Ward, Golovkin would need guys like Martinez, Sturm, Murray, Geale, and some super middleweights.

I dont think Rubio steps aside again... sergio wiill likely get stripped which makes it a non unification I suppose.

Anyway, I prefer Quillin or jR vs GGG and Canelo-Angulo vs Cotto-Martinez winner. Beither Cotto or Martinez have anything to prove by fighting GGG and should just chase one or two more high profile fights and call it quits. I think Quillin vs GGG is more important to the division and of course if GGG challenged himself at 168 *IF* he cant find anything at 160 that'd be sweet too. I think GGG beats Froch but I need to see how he handles someone like that or jR.

Thank you for your answer. You made good points and I agreed with you up until you said Golovkin would need to beat some super middleweights. Why would Golovkin have to move up in weight to catch up to someone who hasn't done so himself?

I think when GGG goes to 168 he's getting Ward right away..
