Are we talking about a Hagler granite chin or a Jessie Feliciano/Ricky granite Quiles chin?

the poll stipulates feather fists with a granite chin, or a true puncher with a glass jaw.

not a "decent chin," mind you. a glass one.

i can't believe this is even a discussion.

Sure you did. You wrote "anybody who doesn't take the chin hasn't been watching enough boxing" in direct the reply to my post. Even if it hadn't been directed at me specifically, the implication remains because I favor power over chin.

and hearns had a good chin. it wasn't great, but it certainly wasn't glass when compared to his contemporaries. hearns' lack of durability is largely a myth that stems from the hagler and first leonard fights, where he ended up rocking around the ring in knockout losses. in reality, he was fighting the best welterweight since ray robinson at the height of his powers, and marvin hagler. both hagler and leonard were very good punchers. hearns didn't box like a guy protecting a bad chin, and that's because he wasn't.
I said Gavilan had "relatively little power," not featherfisted. I believe he had respectable power at best. The "Keed" himself once said that Robinson told him he had never been hit as hard as one of Gavilan's straight rights. It would appear Gavilan landed a particularly good shot; his KO record didn't reflect great power.

We agree that Hearns didn't have a granite chin. I agree that he had a decent chin, but I would say it was on the lower side of good. Maybe it's been underrated over the years, like Tyson's. You may have a point there.

when you're boxing at the top, you're going to get hit. nothing about having great power mandates that an opponent won't hit you.
There have been few greatly successful fighters with the extremes in attributes the TS suggests. As I stated earlier, my preference for power was a personal choice. I wasn't merely thinking about success in the ring, but about my future after my boxing days are over. That probably has a lot to do with my chronological age. When you've lived long enough, you tend to appreciate time and health a little more.

Whether accurate or not, it seems to me that the tougher fighters have always tended towards getting hit more often -- with the notable exception of guys like Ali and Duran. But even Ali's vaunted defense didn't save him from terrible boxing-related brain trauma.

This is a tough one. I'm leaning toward granite chin, but there are obvious reasons to choose the one punch KO power.

Granite chin means youre taking punches. Solid D and athleticism should make up for the lack of a granite chin.

Roy Jones comes to mind. So does Vlad. being a Roy Jones or a Vlad is not bad at all. I'll take power..

                  You goofs..

Granite chin and no power means you take a beating because a MF dont respect your power. Santos Pakau comes to mind...

OK, so I have a granite chin, and feather fists. Does that mean I also have superb skills to go with it? If not, give me the 1 punch KO power. I don't want brain damage by the time I'm in my 30s.

LMAO, Lucian Bute had success though. He wont be GOAT or HOF but he made money and made it to the top before he took his first L.

The juarez circuit is full of tough guys with granite chins that get beat like dogs on the regular.

This is like saying Santos Pakau > Lucian Bute

This is a good debate though, can go both ways or no way honestly. Sweet Pea was feather fisted but didnt get hit on the chin much. AFAIK he didnt have power OR a chin but he is one of the GOATs.
