There's a very good chance Cotto makes this competitive. Martinez has been breaking down for years.

      Good breakdown from Dwyer:

Cotto against the Martinez that fought Murray would definitely be competitive. The main intrigue of this matchup is that Martinez has really regressed to the level of his previous fight. That's not for certain though so it's a coin flip. We'll either have a great fight, or Martinez should be able to take care of business easily.

And this isn't a scenario where Cotto is going to be smaller and more agile. Martinez is faster, has better balance and movement, hit's harder, has better punch resistance.

In my mind, this fight is a mismatch and I don't know why Cotto is taking it.

Sure Martinez is a bit older now, but that's not going to be nearly enough for Cotto to win. He will be outboxed bad for 3-4 rounds and I see Martinez taking him out somewhere around the 5th or 6th
An 85% healthy Martinez would F up Cotto and KO by 10th.

          Why?

          1) Cotto is easily hit by southpaws trying landing the left hook, his biggest weapon.
          2) Cotto power near 160 would not be sufficient. At 154, his power is vastly overrated.
          3) Cotto tends to gas out in the later rds while Martinez paces well.
          4) Martinez can hit HARD and can fight well backfoot

          - Watch out for that straight left or upper cut left that KO Cotto possibly cold. Cotto's records against southpaws not exactly that great.

Depends on what Martinez has left. If he can't move like he used to then that Cotto jab is going to be a nightmare.

I'm still caught in two minds on this one. I think Martinez may be to big for Cotto..how much he has left in the tank will play a big part though.

It's a fight that intrigues me.

Cotto-Martinez is going to mirror Cotto-Trout only this time Trout is going to be packing power.

Martinez will be 39-years-old by the time he steps in against Cotto. Given considerations towards reports of his injuries, and balancing his performances against his competition, I'm not convinced by this prediction. I see this as a competitive fight, stylistically I don't like it for Cotto - but I see Cotto as the better fighter and with a boost from Roach, I think Cotto raises his game to make history and seal his legacy as one of the modern era's true champions.

Threads like these make me want to grab a jet and fly straight into space so it can explode.

How could anyone think this won't be competitive? That is the better question. Cotto is a world class fighter, Martinez is not. Compare resumes and Cotto is more proven than Martinez is. Not to mention, Sergio is a 39 year old fighter coming off several surgeries. He got dragged across the ring by a weeded up version of Chavez Jr and spanked by Murray. His best wins? The drunk Pavlik? Paul Williams? Who struggled against Ishida and was a very vulnerable fighter. And should we forget about his loss to Margarito?

The more I think about it, the more I realize Cotto will take it via UD. Wouldn't be surprised if he stopped Martinez though.
