Does anyone actually think Cotto vs Martinez is competetive?

How could anyone think this won't be competitive? That is the better question. Cotto is a world class fighter, Martinez is not. Compare resumes and Cotto is more proven than Martinez is. Not to mention, Sergio is a 39 year old fighter coming off several surgeries. He got dragged across the ring by a weeded up version of Chavez Jr and spanked by Murray. His best wins? The drunk Pavlik? Paul Williams? Who struggled against Ishida and was a very vulnerable fighter. And should we forget about his loss to Margarito?

The more I think about it, the more I realize Cotto will take it via UD. Wouldn't be surprised if he stopped Martinez though.
That's what I've been thinking too.

Everyone expects Cotto to lose. A Cotto win is HUGE for him. This was a no brainer for team Cotto.

For Martinez this is the biggest money fight he can make for the given risk, tail end of his career, so why not?

Agreed. Cotto has nothing to lose. He is the smaller fighter moving up in weight where if Sergio loses it's all over. Losing to a smaller fighter who moved up in weight

Bring the guy who just had knee surgery into a technical boxing match?

I can see Cotto boxing circles around Sergio.

One thing that people aren't getting is that in this fight Cotto is the better boxer. Sergio has an unorthodox style that works against slow lumbering opponents, but he is definitely no technician. Sergio's style focuses a lot on his agility, which has been failing him as of late.

Sergio will probably try to press the action and we've seen how uncomfortable he can be doing that. Cotto will force Sergio into a boxing match and easily win the rounds against a hobbled and declining Martinez who won't have an easy target like he did against PWill, Pavlik and Chavez Jr.

Sergio is the one who better not get careless. He may kiss the canvas a few times if he is not careful.

If Sergio tries to box on the back foot, King Cotto will cut off the ring on him with his superior ring generalship, get inside with the jab and a high guard, and systematically break him down with body work. The King's piston like jab will crush Sergio's nose, he will not be able to breathe and he will pay. The King will be rewarded with a likely KO/TKO late or wide UD.

If Maravilla tries to pressure King Cotto and make it a brawl then it will be all over for Sergio. King Cotto will destroy him, Sergio will get broken down by The King's left hook, combinations and body attack. His powerful jab swelling Sergios right eye, obstructing his view, not seeing the final left hook, putting Maravilla to sleep! Cotto under 6rd in a brawl type of fight.

This is a lose lose situation for Cotto. If he loses he might retire. And if he wins, people will say Martinez was shot. Thus never getting credit for the win.

Yep that's true. A couple things about martinez's supposed speed advantage. He looks really fast against the guys he is fighting and he used to be a hell of a lot of faster but that was then this is now. Hand speed wise Cotto will surprise a lot of people and I think look faster than Martinez. Can Cotto avoid the straight lefts? If not could be a short night for him. Can he carry enough power up to make Martinez respect him? Roach must think so. Not sure he can win this one but I think he has a chance and it will be exciting.

IMO, it all comes down to what Martinez shows up, and nobody here knows that. If it's an old, ring rusted Martinez, with iffy legs, then Cotto stands a decent chance (unless he gets busted up and stopped). If Martinez shows up looking and feeling fresh then it should be a pretty easy night for him all things considered. Personally I wouldn't try to call it until the first couple of rounds are in the bank.
