no one had brian rose going to win that fight, gary russel is a top amateur pedigree who most thought would beat loma.

              • I do not care for a fighter's skin colour or nationality , nor do I support European fighters over Americans or vice versa.

The USA is certainly not getting ran out of boxing, it is by far the bigges country for professional boxing. The best fighters fight in the US (and I, a european have to wake up at crazy hours to watch them )

With all that said, there is a slow but steady decline, in my opinion at least.

I believe it is due to a lack of an efficient recruiting /youth system, along with boxing gaining more popularity and probably getting more funds in other countries.

The last american boxer to win a gold medal in boxing was Andre Ward in 2004, before him we have to go all the way back to De la Hoya in 1992.

In comparison with the golden age of American Boxing that's very little:
Ali won the gold at lhw in Rome (160) then Frazier(1964), Foreman (1968) and I am only naming those who have made it through the pro.

Recently Cuba and Eastern Euorope are doing pretty well.
Cuba and Ukraine are the only countries with 2 gold medals (flyweight and light welterweight for Cuba, lightweight and heavyweight for Ukraine).

Rigondeaux and Gamboa are both gold medalists, while Kazakistan won the last 3 editions of the ww olympic tournament with 3 different guys and GGG won a silver medal himself (2004).
