You're confusing an opinion with a fact. These lists are always subjective, and the notion that someone like Duran is absolutely the greatest lightweight in history is ridiculous and suggests a complete ignorance of the depth and quality of the history of the lightweight division.Comment

I'm very aware of the quality and depth of the Lightweight division thank you very much. I'm also aware that when boxing historians are polled Duran is the consensus pick for the Lightweight GOAT over the likes of Benny Leonard, Joe Gans, Carlos Ortiz, Pernell Whitaker, ect ect ect. And THAT holds a hell of a lot more weight with me than a random poster on Boxing Scene with an opinion and an azzhole. You're confusing an opinion with a fact. Nah man. While many agree Duran was great he barely cracks the top 10 on most lists. Lightweight has been around a while.....I'm very aware of the quality and depth of the Lightweight division thank you very much. Tony Canzoneri
Carlos Ortiz
Benny Leonard
Ike Williams
Sam Angott
Bob Montgomery
Joe Gans
All these guys are greater than Duran....Last edited by RealIzm; 12-14-2013, 04:08 AM.Comment

I don't know whose lists you've been reading but they sure as hell don't include many boxing historians.Comment

Don't be silly, Gans, Leonard and Ortiz are the only ones on that list on the same tier as Duran, the only one I'd argue is greater then Duran though is probably Leonard who's resume at 135 is ****ing phenomenal and beats Duran's but too say Duran barely cracks the top 10 is ridiculous.
It comes down too preference really and what you rate higher, the eye test, resume, longevity, title reign etc etc, but Duran is definitely top 3 in all categories.Last edited by NChristo; 12-14-2013, 04:59 AM.Comment

Any schmuck with an opinion can pass themselves off as a "historian" - it doesn't make their opinion anymore credible. And if you do place so much credence to the opinions of what historians think, I think you'll find very, very few regarded Duran among the greatest of lightweights thirty odd years ago.
Lou Ambers, one of the fighters not even mentioned by you, has a more impressive resume than Duran has as a lightweight.Comment

I have him #4 myself. You're confusing an opinion with a fact. He's definitely Top 5 minimum though. That's very minimum.Comment
