I don't think of Martinez as the middleweight champion of the world anymore. I use to think of him as the champ but he has avoided the very best middleweights for too long now. He has taken the title to Argentina where the scoring and referee will be very partial to him. He is picking easy fights while he holds out for a big money fight with a smaller man like Cotto. If he would fight the man he should be fighting and beat him I would then think of him as the real champ again. He should be fighting GGG and not an unknown 154 pounder. GGG is the guy I think is the best middleweight in the world and he will fight any top middleweight who will sign the contract. Quillin is another guy Martinez could have fought instead of the lesser middleweights he has been fighting.
Sergio Martinez to fight Damian Jonak

Darren Barker was top 10?Sergio Martinez has fought no one but top 10 ranked fighters in his last 9 fights, all of whom were champions, future champs or past champs, in a span of 3 and a half years. He has been out for a while, he has had two major surgeries and major injuries.
After running the gauntlet, I can let Martinez take a break here, get a tune up and if he is ok with how things goes, he will be back in the mix. if he's even at 70% he'll school GGG by the end of 2014.Comment

Kind of disappointing, but understandable after a long injury-induced layoff. It would be unfair to expect him to fight GGG right away.
Btw I wouldn't be that outraged if the GGG fight never happened. Martinez already beat the champion (Pavlik) and the #1 challenger (Williams) once. He has nothing left to prove, and if he wants to bow out and pass the baton to GGG without fighing him, no one can criticize him for it. Even if he beat GGG, there would always be a new #1 challenger he'd be 'ducking'.Comment
