Sergio Martinez to fight Damian Jonak

The fight will most likely take place in Argentina in March or April. Fight is not signed yet but according to Jonak it's very close.

Damian Jonak 36(21KO)-0 is a Polish light middleweight, he's undefeated but he fought nothing but a complete bums. Plus he's not even middleweight. Huge step back for Sergio IMO.

HBO didn't let Andre Ward take a no name for his return after a long layoff. They're not going to let Martinez either. I don't believe it.

Can't read Polish but a Google translate seems to make it clear that the fight ain't signed, just that talks are going on. Says Jonak knows nothing's certain till everything is signed. Basically just that discussions are ongoing.

Also says that Jonak too has been injured.

I kinda thought that Martinez was talking about coming back straight into a decent fight, though I suppose an unbeaten fighter, in Argentina could earn him some reasonable $s. I was kinda hoping Cotto, but Jonak might be a good yardstick for weighing up future options.

I had understood that Sergio was looking at a JMW though. I think 2 reasons 1) less risk of injury. 2) the 160 strap and (more importantly) Lineal title can be kept as bargaining chips for a big MW fight later in the year.

Damn though, Jonaks obviously being looked at as an easy option (despite being unbeaten he's got only a 56% KO against no-one in particular and only 1 stoppage in his last 6 fights) just imagine the upset...Damian Jonak..Lineal MW world champion

No need to get touchy, no-one's criticising Sergio for taking a tune-up.

My guess is it won't be an HBO event, they'll probably just buy the rights off the Argentine broadcaster.

Sergio Martinez has fought no one but top 10 ranked fighters in his last 9 fights, all of whom were champions, future champs or past champs, in a span of 3 and a half years. He has been out for a while, he has had two major surgeries and major injuries.

After running the gauntlet, I can let Martinez take a break here, get a tune up and if he is ok with how things goes, he will be back in the mix. if he's even at 70% he'll school GGG by the end of 2014.
