Good thing you're not a matchmaker since we've seen plenty of examples where the person who lost the first fight came back to win the second fight.
Anyone can get caught with a good shot, so Mares obviously can win a rematch, but I don't think it's too often you see someone who lost by KO1 win a return match.

"Sugar" lost a fifteen round decision in a classic fight. And it's well known now that Leonard and his team pressured Duran into a quick rematch, knowing that Roberto was notorious for blowing up between fights.

[quote=BIGPOPPAPUMP] Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, and manager Frank Espinoza, have confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) has exercised his immediate rematch clause against WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs).This past Saturday night in Carson, California - Gonzalez scored a major upset when he stopped Mares in ths first round. Mares got caught by Gonzalez's money punch - the left hook - and he never fully recovered.

Initially, Mares was going to take a rest until 2014, but now it appears the Mexican slugger is going to fight again in 2013 - against Gonzalez.

If Mares would have taken off until 2014, then Golden Boy, who hold controlling options on Gonzalez, were interested in matching him against Gary Russell Jr. [ Click Here To Read More] [/quote

I think Mares is a good fighter, but stylistically I feel Gonzalez has his number. These weren't wild lucky punches we seen. These were timed and perfected. Thoughts?

I agree. I would seriously consider betting Abner loses once again by KO.

Fighters tend to get emotional after a fight. I know Mares said he wanted to take a break, and why wouldn't he, he's had tough fights lately. But he's also a warrior, I hope he took the proper time to reflect on his loss.

First of all, virtually nobody thought Gonzalez would even win. Secondly, thats why you fight the fights. Lastly, guys like Abner Mares are what make the sport what it is. All this sissy, safety first ****, is for guys who are afraid to take chances. And more often than not, are often boring. Boxing is the sport of fighting. Where two men look eachother in the eye and say, "I'll beat you before you beat me".

Abner Mares is the epitome of that in todays landscape.

The man has 47 Ko's, 7 in the 1st round and you call it a lucky shot, NSB is out of control.

Huh? Leonard-Duran I (a 15 round UD) was nothing like the fight we saw this past weekend. Mares was sent packing in the first round.

The notion that modern boxing is supposed to be a barbaric exercise is just ******. Fighters are human. They can be hurt. Every time a fighter walks into the ring, he risks his health and even his life.

I guess some "fans" find it easy to sit in front of the television, hoping for nothing more than 36 minutes of two guys beating each other's heads in, or, even better - a spectacular knockout that leaves one man laying on the canvas unconscious.

Who cares if these guys are braver than they are smart? They're warriors, right?! Who cares if these guys have families? They're fighting for glory and making millions, right?!

Why should you care about the health and safety of these fighters? Once the fights are over, the fighters and their families are left to deal with the damage that can be inflicted by repeated blows to the head. You don't have to take the punches or deal with their effects. No sir, you get to log onto BoxingScene.com and praise the warrior spirit of the next young fighter who is willing to sacrifice his health for your entertainment.

"I'll beat you before you beat me." How romantic. Next time you need some violence in your life, try a Russell Crowe movie. You'll probably enjoy it more than boxing.

                      Mares is ballsy....respect.

Despite getting blown out in the first round he's doing everything a champ should do, Donaire should take note. First and foremost he was humble in defeat and didn't look for excuses or non-existent injuries. And now it appears he wants to avenge his only loss right away. Literally moments after getting laid out in what is now known as the Abner Mares Memorial Center (formerly stub hub arena) at that. What a G.
