Props to Mares for taking the rematch. That's what real champions do.

Mares did not move his head to dodge the jab, and he paid the price. He tried to pick off Jhonny's shots with his arms, and fell for a feint to the body and caught a left hook that damn near gave him whiplash.

He then traded with a puncher while hurt, and that is a no no. Mares started to believe in his power instead of using his jab and moving his head. Imo he thought that Jhonny was done.

Jhonny is the consummate pro. You can never take guys like that lightly. Mares's mistakes are definitely correctable. Maybe he thought that he could just hit Jhonny on the chin and he's out. Or maybe Jhonny has his number.

I'm glad that Mares is taking the rematch.

I guess some "fans" find it easy to sit in front of the television, hoping for nothing more than 36 minutes of two guys beating each other's heads in, or, even better - a spectacular knockout that leaves one man laying on the canvas unconscious.

Who cares if these guys are braver than they are smart? They're warriors, right?! Who cares if these guys have families? They're fighting for glory and making millions, right?!

Why should you care about the health and safety of these fighters? Once the fights are over, the fighters and their families are left to deal with the damage that can be inflicted by repeated blows to the head. You don't have to take the punches or deal with their effects. No sir, you get to log onto BoxingScene.com and praise the warrior spirit of the next young fighter who is willing to sacrifice his health for your entertainment.

"I'll beat you before you beat me." How romantic. Next time you need some violence in your life, try a Russell Crowe movie. You'll probably enjoy it more than boxing.
            Awesome post!!

You're forgetting one thing. These fighters chose this profession. They chose to chase the glory by getting their faces bashed in, and guess what?

You're damn right I don't care. I pay a pretty penny to watch on tv, in person, pay for merchandise, etc. Boxing is a violent sport. They chose it as their profession, just as I choose to pay to watch. I spent over $600 bucks this past weekend to watch two men slug it out with eachother. And I'll pay for it again, and again, and again and again and again.

Boxing is based on violence. Remember that next time you're concerned about their health and welfare. Fighting is a barbaric instinct of man. If you're going to watch boxing, you might want to get used to it.

that was quick, i honestly thought we wouldn't see this rematch until next year (or even negotiations for a rematch until the end of the year). mares is a badass, it's as simple as that. hopefully he's able to understand and correct his mistakes in the rematch though, and fight a little smarter. i don't think gonz has his number, it was a perfect shot that abner couldn't recover from, as well as not fighting smart after getting hurt, but we'll just have to wait and see how this rematch goes. i can't wait for this one.

Glad to see Mares "Man Up!" He was looking real suspect by talking about taking a break. I would much rather see Gary Russell Jr. fight Leo Santa Cruz, and let the winner get a crack at the winner of the rematch.

If you have not a care in the world for the health of the fighters in this sport, you're not a boxing fan. You're a troubled person.

The next $600 you spend should be directed to a psychiatrist.
