Matthysse and his team were overconfident coming to this fight. Lucas thought Danny was not that good (even that Peterson was better than Danny) and he would win inside 6 rounds.
No doubt they took the fight very seriously, but after the Peterson fight the perceived risk was much higher in Danny's camp. As a result, his team made much more effort to closely study the rival and devise a plan.
Also many American observers and fans underestimated Garcia.
It was not irrelevant either that the Murphy Law favored Danny in this case. Matthysse would have likely won the fight without the swelled eye incident.
Matthysse's overconfidence + Danny's good plan and performance + Eye incident = Upset
I don't think Lucas was overrated (ask Peterson), nor he was object of a kind of irrational fascination. Instead, I think some people would have to ask why a growing segment of American fans needs so desperately KO artists (or at least more exciting fighters) and have to import them from abroad. Too much defensive and speculative boxing today...
The bubble burst but Lucas didn't pump it up. Don't blame him nor his team.
