Battling Nelson would beat Floyd 10 times out of 10 in a finish fight. 45 rounds. Horsehair gloves. Old School rules.

Boxrec Boxing Encyclopaedia and every other authority I've seen over the past many decades say that Dempsey's weight was 187. It was recorded just before the fight. Dempsey never had a scrap of superfluous weight, always trained to a hair, enormously strong. It's highly doubtful that he'd have been able to get down to 175, without cutting off an arm.

Dempsey said it was a scam, that he weighed closer to 180.

Yea, if Dempsey fought today he'd probably be a supermiddleweight.

the guys who fought then fought more rounds more often, had less padding in their gloves and fought closer to their natural weight, when you say Dempsey can't be a Klitschko , its like saying and 300sl can beat the SLR in a race, its not a fair comparison because times have changed nutrition, training, equipment, medicine, it wouldn't be an even playing field, yeah the Klits would beat him, but that doesn't take anything away from Jack, he did it the harder way his career is more impressive

                How early are we talking?

I don't really see many of the early fighters from the 00's-10's getting much praise outside of the select few. There were quite a lot of good fighters back then that are hard to judge in general for obvious reasons.

A lot of people do overrate both Johnson and Dempsey IMO, the very early HW's. Both great fighters IMO and certainly great for their day but I think people go a abit far when they say they would beat the Klitschko's.

I mean, how is Jack Johsnon going to beat Wladmir Klitschko?

I would rank both higher but H2H wise, neither are going to have much luck with Wlad.

Some HW contenders of today perhaps but not the Klitschkos.

Jack Johnson too.... although Amir probably would've toyed with him for a couple of rounds before brutally knocking him old cold mid way through round 4

I love how the TS calls over 30s geriatrics but most of the fighters he rates are knocking on 40

I have more of a problem with people getting up in arms when you say a modern day fighter is better than one of these old school fighters WHO HAVE NO FOOTAGE OF THEM IN A RING. Going by word of mouth and resume. I don't give a **** what they say some of the fighters today would rule the eras back then.

Yes, there were some all-time greats, but people give boxers of that era too much credit in my opinion.....

Take for instance a guy like Jack Dempsey....there's no way anyone can convince me that a guy like Wladimir Klitschko wouldn't knock him unconscious....he was a light heavyweight....the fact that he was considered an all time great goes to show that the competition either wasn't very deep or he was just that good for his time...

There were a lot of part-time fighters who were considered good or great during those times as well....

We have guys now days who are fully dedicated modern marvels from an athletic standpoint...

I would match and pick many modern day fighters against the old school fighters and I think some of the modern day guys would do their thing....

People tend to follow what media people and writers say and take it as the gospel...

I can speak for myself in that I've seen the modern day fighters and I wasn't there during the early 1900's, so I can't legitimately say that a fighter back then would destroy a fighter from this era.....
This is so true. I remember at one point back when Pac was at his high and being discussed as one of the ATG, Teddy Atlas said something along the lines that he wouldnt pick Pac over the older guys just because they had some like a couple hundred fights. Seriously? Youd pick someone over someone just becuase they have 200 fights? Thats some BS. I was looking through SRR record at boxrec and while i dont contest that hes one of the ATG, decide for yourself when like 95% of the time hes fighting guys that have 50-50win loss ratio. Waaaaay too much credit for old time fighters
