Boxrec Boxing Encyclopaedia and every other authority I've seen over the past many decades say that Dempsey's weight was 187. It was recorded just before the fight. Dempsey never had a scrap of superfluous weight, always trained to a hair, enormously strong. It's highly doubtful that he'd have been able to get down to 175, without cutting off an arm.
I'm taking his word for it.
again, if light heavies today weigh more then that the day of the fight, why would it seem so implausible to you that he'd have trouble cutting weight the night before to make the limit today?
