In the first round, Lucas patiently tested Peterson's reactions to a variety of punches... Lucas realized that Lamont was carefully defending against right punches, and then Lucas eventually caught Peterson with a powerful left hook (with only 10 seconds before the bell) and also hit him with a right hook just during the bell ring. After that, I suspect that Lucas just lured Lamont with looping punches, in order to catch him precisely with that short left hook which put him down with 40 seconds remaining in the 2nd round (in that round, I saw Peterson poorly defending himself against left hooks).
In the 3rd round, Lucas mostly looked to land left uppercuts and hooks -- with the hooks finally delivering the brutal stoppage.
To conclude: in my opinion Matthysse is not just "a beast", he coolheadedly followed the game plan he could figure out during the fight.
