Was this a star making performance? Will people still not give a damn about Trout?

This was a great win and a great name for Trout, but I don't think it was enough for Trout to really emerge as a star.
nope. the only way he matters is if he keeps winning. the masses don't like technical, defensive fighters without a ko punch

It's miles away from a star-making performance. He's nowhere near Canelo's skill level. He was given Cotto for a dominating win, but he didn't deliver even with all his advantages. He was on survival mode from the very first round and didn't have the mental capability to stop Cotto. He has a long way to go. He should be awarded Lara, and both would give the audience a boring sleep fest.

I honestly didn't know anything about him before this fight. But after watching him I came away impressed.

Maybe he isn't going to get a lot of knockouts but so what. He is a slick and classy boxer, very well schooled. If he was European and beat Cotto with that style a lot of posters on here would be slurping his nuts.

I hope so for Trout's sake, but I doubt it. It was a very boring a sloppy fight from both guys. Nothing that makes me excited to really see Trout again, but who knows?

I feel like we're talking about Bradley after the Pacquiao fight with the comments I'm reading. Trout won and deserved the victory. If they have a rematch, I think Trout would beat him even more convincingly than he did the first time.

Boxing is in a rough spot when it comes to finding exciting fighters on the elite levels at this point in time which may start to hurt the sport. When it comes to truly exciting fighters who are in, lets say the top 25 p4p, how many are there really? Boxing lost two of its biggest and most exciting draws in two weeks time (obviously Hatton is nowhere near elite) and both were beat by boring technical, defensive minded fighters. Sergio is damn near 40 and will be finished after another fight or two, as will Floyd and Manny and Froch and Marquez. Boxing is turning over again and I hope we can get some more entertaining fighters to put asses in the seats. I'm going to say something I never thought I would say, but thank God for Broner. Ward is the best fighter in the world, but he will never be a ppv draw. Things will be interesting over the next couple of years to say the least. Maybe not in a good way.

Boxing is as much about good technical fighters like Ward and Trout as it is about face-first brawlers.

I don't know about a "star" but i definitely didn't give a crap before now he is way more recognizable and can get better fights.

No, this fight was more about what Cotto had left than what Trout actually did in the fight. Trout has some nice boxing skills, but he is so slow that it's ridiculous. I don't think I have ever seen a fighter that slow before. Trout had many physical advantages over Cotto and he started using them in the second half of the fight. Does Trout have knockout power? He will be able to frustrate some dudes with his slippery style and he is good at avoiding shots. I don't know how far he will go, though. I think 154 is a weak division, or at least not a crowd pleasing division.
