Based off this win i consider Trout the best 154 pounder right now. Floyd i rank at 147.
Was this a star making performance? Will people still not give a damn about Trout?

To become an overnight sensation you need to really beat someone great when there stock is very high and they are at the top of their game. I would not say this win ticks all those boxes. Cotto is still a formidable fighter, but not a p4p type like he was at his best, take into account it's his third weight division, and he has never really been a force at 154. Also he was coming off a loss, even if it was against Floyd. The type of win that would propel Trout into a star, is a Martinez type win.
Even tough Trout does not have a crowd pleasing style, he can become a star like Winky did for a while, but it will have to be longevity, and great wins like Winky eventually got.
Personally I don't see that kind of talent. Winky dominated a close to prime Mosley, Tito, etc. Trout is not that good, and this win is not on that level.Comment

sadly, a star-making performance is not enough... he needs a star-making personality & marketing... he needs to build his brand.
he just seems like a straight forward kind of dude. no BS... no hype...
if a p4p proven fighter like ward is struggling to become a star, i just dont see how trout can do any better....
we can already see with broner how gamesmanship & charisma can DEFINITELY get you followers.
trout deserves the big fights, but the guy needs to get a following.Comment

Me neither and because of that I thought no way he'd be able to deal with cotto but he boxed very smart and very cool he didn't panic at all..I honestly didn't know anything about him before this fight. But after watching him I came away impressed.
Maybe he isn't going to get a lot of knockouts but so what. He is a slick and classy boxer, very well schooled. If he was European and beat Cotto with that style a lot of posters on here would be slurping his nuts.
I see lot's of posters talking about the "star" status...it doesnt matter how well known he is..for us boxing fans it's good to have him around..ward is not that famous either and its not a star like pacquiao or mayweather but them dudes know how to box..looking forward to his next fight..and cotto should move down he didn't look alright last night.Comment

The question of the thread was if this was a star-making performance.
There's no "hatin" because one realize it most likely wasn't.
Trout is a good and relevant fighter. But he's not a star and most likely wont be.
If you believe so, you're being very ******* with the term star. Was Winky Wright a star? He beat a ****load of great fighters.Comment

Stars are made, not born.
It took years and years for Mayweather to become the star he is today. Mainly because he couldn't get the fights that would catapult him to stardom. He was high risk low reward.
Anyone at 154 can become a star. It's just a matter of winning when given the opportunity and having the mouth to promote fights.Comment

I don't know what a star making performance looks like but I think he did pretty good against a solid fighter like cotto..it's not easy for a tall guy to fight a short good man..we've seen it with khan..khan has so many advantages but once he gets hit hard he's playing the opponents game instead of staying cool and using his reach and boxing ability. The question of the thread was if this was a star-making performance.

The star thing I think it all depends how you sell yourself to the crowd..mayweather is the rich "bad guy" people just pay to see him lose..pacquiao is the nice congressman who used to sell donuts in the streets so automatically people will feel for the guy..it's got a lot to do with a fighters persona..there's so many great fighters out there they will never become "stars" because their persona is either boring as hell or they don't like the spot light like some other fighters.Last edited by BoZz; 12-02-2012, 09:03 PM.Comment
