i did read the article and what i got from this is if nonito actually wanted to fight the rest at 122 then why mention a move up? plenty of good fights for him and for him to mention a move up just sounds like he's on his way up. why else mention it? guess thats not what u got from it richard

Rafael WAS a fantastic fighter. He is not one any more. If Nishioka was truly the man at 122, Marquez would not have been able to be remotely competitive with him.

Basically every objective observer knew this going into the fight.

Nishioka showed his age against Marquez, and after a year layoff, he showed that he has nothing left against Donaire.

At this stage, Donaire is a boxer visible among the casual fans so good matchmaking is required for the long run. Donaire-Rigondeux might be great on paper yet doesn't seem to excite the casual mainstream fans.

Anyone who keeps up with Donaire; Not only knows what he looks like, but actually somewhat follows his career would have at least in passing heard of Rigondeaux since their names are constantly being put together. If this fight makes it to PPV 95% of the sells are gonna be off of Donaire's back. Whether or not Donaire is visible in the eyes of the casual fan is subjective to a point, but I highly disagree. There's like 4 or 5 guys that can claim that. The first 2 are obvious, Cotto and Canelo because of very large ethnic fanbases and perhaps Hatton.

All the lobbying for Rigondeaux to build up his name more isn't gonna make much of a difference to PPV sells because he is 32 years old and will never ever be a major attraction due to a variety of factors(Size, style, age, and his lack of a fanbase).

With that said, I don't see what the hold up is, nor what Arum stands to lose in his investment in Rigondeaux who will never even headline his own PPV.

Because he is considering BOTH! He DID NOT say "If no challenges at 122". That is the writer's *** up or the writer did it for shock value!

Chris John fought Rocky Juarez twice here. He can come to the US. The point is there are many fights that would be scintillating between Rigo/Donaire against a host of serious threats. Salido/Garcia/Russell/Darch/Mares/Moreno. Rigo vs Donaire is not the last fight on earth. Some of those guys could make for a more interesting fight.

Why can't you accept that a 37 year old fighter who was contemplating retirement was over the hill?

Fighters usually contemplate retirement because the feel they are slipping. And when a fighter himself realizes he is slipping, he has usually slipped ALOT.

Nishioka realized he was past it, why cant you?

becuase your reason to why you think he's over the hill is ridiculous and false..that is why ...and i didn't see him over the hill this weekend given ive seen him in fights where he looked worse in his younger years..
