Why do people hate James Toney?

Then take Ali out your sig, because the condition he came into a lot of fights would be classified as "pudgy" by today's standards. Hell, maybe even then because Ken Norton was in great conditioning.

Ruiz a belt holder consistently for the last couple years versus Danny 'Fat Ass' Williams, Vitali's title defense.
I would be quiet if I were you.

James Toney is perfect for fans who know nothing about the skills of boxing, but want a guy everybody shouts about, who looks the chisseled part, and who KO's everyone they meet. The same kind who see Wladimir Klitscho as the future of the heavyweights.
I think boxers get pidgeon-holed by commentators; most commentaters take their comments from other commentaters. James is the fat guy who could have done better. What they mean is he didn't beat Roy Jones Jr - who beat Toney the same way Leonard beat Hagler - then turned up in the ring looking like he ate his mom's cakeshop. This, and some foolishness outside the ring, not giving boxing commentaters their 'due respect'(!) was enough to have James' name fixed in the media as mouthy bad guy. I read, watch a lot of boxing stuff and rarely have I seen James Toney being given the accolades he deserves.
Look at his record: Micheal Nunn, Iran Barkley, Mike McCallum, Reggie Johnson, to name a few. OK, he lost some, but the way he fought was always admirable. In the last couple of years he's moved through the divisions to heavyweight - he toyed with Vassily Jirove, and humiliated Evander Holyfield. I didn't see the Ruiz fight, but against Booker he took a young unbeaten fighter and played with him.
Above all, it's his style that I love. As a young fighter James was fast of hand and foot, always attack-minded, a devastating combination puncher. As he's aged he's slowed, but made the slow pace act in his favour. He always looks to land the first punch, then covers up and watches what the guy has to offer. When other fighters take time to have a look, they're showing their intelligence; when James does it, he's being lazy. He's fantastically economical, rolling forward flat footed, chin-behind-the-shoulder, low left covering the body, high right guard, swaying from the hips, twisting to take the sting out of punches - all with his eyes fixed on the other guy, waiting to reply - which usually comes in a flurry of punches designed to get a guy to shift his guard, and offer Toney the spot for a heavy blow. If the guy doesn't take the bait, James just walks forward and starts beating on them regularly with short fast hooks and uppercuts to head and body. He may not be mayweather-fast, but in an average round he lands more shots than the pretty boy.
Everything he does in the ring is designed to weaken, frustrate, con and dishearten the other guy -who respond by getting more desperate, and wide open, making mistakes which Toney punishes.
On his skills level, the heart he demonstrates in the execution of them, the calibre of opponents he's faced, James Toney should be a future Hall of Famer..... however, some people seem to concentrate on what a fighter looks like, or what he says, rather than what he brings to the ring.Comment

Exactly... good statement.
Ruiz was schooled by Toney

Are you a schoolgirl? Once again, in case you missed it... I don't care about Williams. Or Toney, or Vitali...Originally posted by .:ImSoFlyyy:.Better than Williams.
Lay off that weed too.
FYI, I'm not into weed. Usually that's reserved for people who thought Zab beat Tszyu the first time.
