Well, we know that Ortiz had to have surgery and a titanium rod put in. Did Abraham have surgery for his broken jaw?Comment

hey I take back what I said about Ortiz that he wasn't a Chingon!! He's a gran Chingon!! much respect to Ortiz and hope to see him fight that rematch with Lopez, that says alot that victor ain't no punk, plus most would'nt show as much heart like he did in the ring, fighting on with a broken jaw.Comment

Abraham's mouth was also hanging open, and had much more swelling. His jaw was broken by an accidental head butt. It looked way worse... I watched both fights.
Ortiz' trainer was right there. He wanted Ortiz to tough it out for the last three rounds (of course now he has to do damage control for the sake of Ortiz' career). Too much was on the line... Obv the Sept 15th fight was a wrap, but his career has now taken a serious hit. I doubt he ever gets to fight Canelo now.
No one disputes his jaw was ****ed up. Personally, I don't remember his mouth hanging open at all times. Probably because he closed it with his hands and I didn't notice. But he wasn't constantly fighting with an open mouth like Abraham was and the swelling wasn't quite as bad.
I realize he had a messed up jaw and that it must have hurt like hell. But he's the first I've ever seen quit due to a broken jaw. And this was a fight where quitting due to pain just should not have been an option. Only three rounds left, up on the cards, against a smaller man whose eyes were messed up (one eye swollen shut), Ortiz having revived his career, big fight(s) lined up, etc. This was like a special circumstance where you don't quit unless the doctor looks at the break and tells you that you can't safely continue.
Furthermore, he's already told us how he views his boxing career in the interview after quitting against Maidana. He doesn't feel he should take punishment. He's too intelligent and good looking for that.Last edited by APryor; 06-25-2012, 04:40 PM.Comment

On 23 September 2006, Abraham won a decision against undefeated contender Edison Miranda despite having his jaw broken in two places in round five. Miranda took advantage of this by fighting dirty. Miranda was deducted five points for landing repeated low blows as well as intentionally headbutting Abraham. However, even without the five points deducted, Abraham would have still won the fight (final result: 114:109, 115:109, 116:109). Abraham's jaw was operated on the night after the fight. He had 22 screws inserted into two titanium plates. After the Miranda bout, Arthur was praised for his ability to finish the fight despite his injury.Comment
