Well, Ortiz is not going to fight for a year, so IDK, maybe Lopez is able to land a big fight on the meantime and won't need to rematch Ortiz.

      Ortiz: My jaw is broken.

      Ref: Yeah. AND?

Guy ignored his corner and called over the ref to bail him out of the fight. How many of you "fans" have ever seen such a thing? I don't recall ever seeing it. I mean, it can't be the first time but it's got to be pretty rare. I have seen guys quit by telling the ref in a round-about way that they can't continue... The ref asks "How you feeling?", guy says "I can't see", that kind of thing.

But to frantically call the ref over so you can get out of there ASAP?

Anyone ever seen a fighter quit from a broken jaw? I've seen a bunch of fighters suffer a broken jaw in a fight. I have never seen a single fighter quit due to a broken jaw though. Anyone ever seen it?

I was kinda confused in the sudden stoppage & really Showtime's commentary made me kinda confused as well. When I saw Ortiz spitting blood like crazy in the locker room I knew the injury was severe. Arthur Abraham is a beast for fighting thru to beat Miranda on a broken jaw & thats the reason he is even relevant today. He probably never would have been that big had he lost that fight. Ortiz had already hit the big time tho & he still fought 2-4 rounds with a broken jaw so I think you can't really knock him. He gave an exciting 9 rounds. It was obvious hearing Ortiz in the interview his jaw was broken. If he comes back and knocks Lopez out he sets himself up for another Berto rematch. People writing Victor off at this point are jumping the gun a bit. Golden Boy needs to step their promo game up they've been slipping lately. Announcing Ortiz-Alvarez before this fight & the way they've handled Lara has made them look like a very amateurish promo company as of late. I will say they have done a good job getting Alexander a shot at a Bailey & getting the welterweight strap around Paulies waist. If they keep the date of September 15th for Canelo it will completely flop if he is fighting anyone other than Miguel Cotto. Come on Golden Boy step it up.

Hopefully Ortiz can recover and make the rematch even more exciting. Can't really say he has no heart if he fought for 5 rounds with a broken jaw. Only he knows the extent of his pain and at least he gets to redeem himself in future bouts.

Honestly, you make some good points. Although Ortiz is the first fighter I have seen quit from a broken jaw, although he is the first one I have seen frantically call over the ref while ignoring his corner, obviously only he knows how painful it was.

But what about his interview after the Maidana fight? He has already admitted to quitting, already admitted that he doesn't feel he should have to take punishment, etc. I don't get why half the site seems to forget that.

I know he showed tremendous heart and toughness against Berto, but before that we heard him say some incredible things in that interview after the Maidana fight. "Incredible" in that no serious fighter has ever publicly said those things in the entire history of the sport.

I cant believe Ortiz is going to have to relive this nightmare from 4 years ago.

The critics will never let this one go.

What is Ortiz going to have to do this time to redeem himself? The last time he had a FOTY with Berto, this time?

Maybe have a fight with Canelo in 2013 AND ko Him?

I just hope Lopez gets the bigger paycheck. He's earned it. Ortiz on the other hand, has had everything handed to him (not in life, talking about his boxing career).
