This is a good matchup and it's going to be an exciting fight but I hate it when this happens. Let Ortiz finish get past his immediate opponent before signing anything else. imo

Crazy to think it wasn't too long since Ortiz was at 140.

I imagine the winner of this fight will fight Mayweather.

I agree. I think Khan will need to beat a good Welterweight first before fighting Floyd, and Sergio-Manny are probably never going to happen.

If Alvarez wins, I'm not so sure though. I think Oscar wants to make Alvarez-Cotto first. But if Ortiz wins, making him a 2 weight champ (man that's crazy to think about for Ortiz so far), I imagine Floyd would definitely entertain fighting a rematch with him at 154 in a unification.

The PPV would probably sell a lot based on the controversy of their first fight, and especially if Ortiz whups Canelo in a high profile PPV fight.

            Wow. Total disrespect to Josesito!
But I am stoked for this fight! Can't wait to make it out there in September

Comments Thread For: Saul Alvarez-Victor Ortiz Confirmed For 9/15, SHO PPV

By Jake Donovan - Golden Boy Promotions confirmed moments ago plans for a September 15 pay-per-view headliner between Saul Alvarez and Victor Ortiz. The fight is contingent on Ortiz getting past Josesito Lopez in their June 23 fight on Showtime.

Should Ortiz win next weekend, the September 15 fight will take place at 154 lb. with Alvarez' alphabet title at stake.

"I think everyone agrees that after last weekend's travesty, that we need fights where we can leave the judges at home," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer stated during an international conference call on Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after came the announcement from Oscar de la Hoya, Golden Boy president.

"We have as the main event Saul Alvarez versus Victor Ortiz at 154 lb. We will also be having on the card as the semi-main event Jhonny Gonzalez versus Daniel Ponce de Leon.

"The two other fights, we will be working with Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez, with Richard and myself to come up with two other fights as exciting as the semi-main events or more exciting than the rest of the fights."

Also confirmed on the call was that Showtime will be the exclusive distributor and producer of the event, which for the moment ends Alvarez' recent stretch of appearances on HBO and its own pay-per-view arm. [Click Here To Read More]

I don't think it was a slight against HBO exactly, Showtime paid a bunch for the Ortiz-Berto rematch and got hosed so they probably had some claim on him. It also keeps Showtime in the PPV game which benefits GBP and they can distance themself a bit from this past weekends ppv by using a different broadcaster.

It works all the way around but still surprising

I'm pumped about this. Best possible fight that could have been made at this point, outside of Cotto which didn't appear to be an option. It appears Golden Boy decided that no matter what Canelo was getting an opponent that was going to be a big step up compared to what he's been fighting. I'm excited about this. I was for sure going to buy when it was PW, was on the fence when it was Kirkland, but completely back on board for Ortiz.
