I will concede that it's possible Solis was somewhat disoriented by that grazing blow to the top of his head, possibly enough to lose his footing and buckle his knee. All possible, but I don't think probable. While it's difficult to conclusively say what actually happened, even with the aid of slo- mo, it seems unlikely that Vitali's glancing shot to the very top of Odlanier's head caused momentary loss of bodily control. A blow of that nature might even knock you or I out, but it's not likely to cause a professional heavyweight like Solis much discomfort. With Solis, he was hit on the head, momentarily stunned, lost equilibrium, feet stayed in relatively the same spot whilst his body fell at the wrong angle. It was all very carefully documented at the time, with slo-mo closeups over and over again for every part of his lower legs and feet. he went down so fast, from a light looking blow, that it was thought that he had faked the KO. it was only when he got up that it was realised that his knee had ruptured.
Although it only seemed a glancing blow, a Klittschko glancing blow, if its in the right spot, can make you see stars. And this was legit. And of course he needs to fight at about 225-30.
Reviewing the tape again now, after about a year's time, I still feel that Odlanier had an issue stepping towards Klitschko, was lightly struck as his legs were reacting to the shift in weight and dropped when his back leg was forced to take on too great a load. The aftermath proved that Solis's injury was all too real.
Naturally, since Odlanier went down directly after Vitali contacted Solis's head with his glove, a KO is the only possible ruling. I wouldn't dispute that for a moment. But over a pint of beer, or on an Internet forum, I'll argue all day long that the "KO" was caused by faulty knees, not a glancing blow of Herculean magnitude.Comment

I'm not a big fan of Solis, mainly because his lack of commitment sickens me. Nonetheless, Odlanier is probably the best heavyweight not named Klitschko. I have to admit that I'm somewhat hopeful Solis has found new determination during his layoff. I might be terribly disappointed soon; but hey, hope springs eternal....Solis is easily the third best heavyweight, and that's with or without Haye being retired. And I'm a bigger Vitali fan than most, but you're fooling yourself if you don't think Solis was winning that first round. As long as he isn't hampered by his injury and long layoff, he should prove himself to be a force again.Comment

His knew blew out when he went rubbery from a temple shot Vitali landed to the top/side of his gaurd. There's no dis*****g that I'm afraid. For you Klitschko fanboys....
It was at :15 into the video... Vitali threw a jab which CLEARLY missed after a hook that hit Solis and CLEARLY DID NOT HURT HIM. You can tell it did not hurt him, Solis stood his ground and that punch barely had any force behind it. He then tried to back up from the jab that missed over his guard. THAT'S when his knew blew out.Comment

Im not gonna argue with a fanboy bro, the video is there. That shot did not hurt Solis neither did a jab that clearly missed.Comment

What round were you guys watching? Solis was clearly winning that round before the fall. But that in itself isn't much as it was a clear feeling out round. It doesn't mean anyone of the two would have definitely gone on to win.
For sure Vitalis punch affected his movement, I mean, any punch thrown or landed garners a reaction but it didn't wobble him or anything like that, people implying it are all delving into stan territory.Comment

Back when it happened a year or so ago, I watched the video about 50 times and am very clear on what happened. Solis had in no way planted wrong or anything and you can actually see him start to wobble and let loose of his leg muscles when he backed up after Vitali hit him. This caused him to contract again once partially regaining concious thinking and his ligaments were damaged because when his muscles contracted, the bones weren't in their natural position at that moment. Either way you slice it, it's a one punch Ko, even if it wasn't of the concussive variety.
Take solace in the probable fact that even if Solis had got to his feet uninjured, he was probably going to get stopped right afterwards or in the next round anyways.
Oh and being a, quote: "Fanboy" has nothing to do with this evaluation.Last edited by Mr. Invincible; 03-28-2012, 04:55 PM.Comment

Whether Solis was HURT or not, he'd gotten off to a good start, incorporating just enough lateral movement to throw Vitali off. His timing was good, and speed of course. Point is, no matter WHAT caused the Solis knee injury, we missed out on a VERY intriguing bout, where Solis landed a couple of clean shots, and his style seemed to be giving Vitali issues, it's not to say Odlanier would of won the fight based on what happened, or Vitali, for that matter. It just means we missed out on a intriguing fight, due to an unfortunate circumstance.
I was just happy to see Vitali face some adversity, and actually face what looked like could be a serious challenge.
An out of shape Solis MIGHT be the best heavyweight NOT named Klitschko, an in shape Solis most definitely is at the time being. Also, I saw someone in here claim Solis was "boring" and "had no personality"?...To an extent I can understand the lack of personality comment, but that's because most Cuban boxers when they step into the squared circle are the most focused you'd ever see. As for his boxing style or his fights being boring, that I just don't understand. He has very good hand-speed that he uses usually in an aggressive fashion, he has evident power, and besides the Vitali fight, Solis is usually the aggressor in his bouts, and he's scored some nice KO's in his so far short career. I'm not saying he's Tyson-like-exciting, but he's exciting to watch usually. Whether someone views him as boring or not, he clearly is talented and has a very respectable skill-set, I enjoy watching all boxing styles, and if a fight is in intriguing with two good fighters squaring off, I get excited, unfortunately you don't.Comment
