This fight will never happen. Canelo is not ripe yet for a fight of this level. Sergio is a bum! Why doesn't he fight any elite fighters during their prime? Why will he move in weight for some either not ready fighters or has beens but won't move in weight for quality opposition? Why does he want to fight JCC jr so badly underestimating him but won't take on Ward or Bute when he himself walks around above Super Middle? The last 2 fights have proven his fight against a drunk on a downward spiral of a Pavlik and something wrong with his brain causing slower reflexes than normal Williams do not qualify him for p4p consideration. It is a disgrace that he uses a translated form of Hagler's moniker because there is nothing MARVELOUS about Pollo Martinez.

What shots would he call? Who's going to all of a sudden at that point decide to fight him for big money? It's not like Andre Ward has some kind of massive fan base and that a fight between the 2 of them is going to break the bank. It's not even a guarantee he'd move to #1 P4P if he won that fight. So if he wins that fight are Floyd, Pac, Jr, or Canelo going to all of a sudden decide to fight him? Of course not.Comment

Lara is a terrible pick, and I say this as a huge Lara fan. Lara is a great fighter who's also being avoided by pretty much everyone, but what is beating him doing for Martinez? It's kinda like when Williams was basically forced to fight Martinez when he was pretty much unknown because Pavlik ducked and then it turned out Martinez was great and it pretty much has ruined PW's career. PW is now thought of as completely shot and overrated all because he was forced into taking a fight against a guy who was really good with no name. That's exactly what Lara is. Why is Martinez expected to have to take fights like this, when they aren't going to get him any closer to getting an actual big money fight? Now that's not to say I wouldn't love seeing this fight, because I think it would be an amazing tactical battle between the 2 of them, but why does Martinez need to fight the guys with no name and huge risk while guys like Canelo, Cotto, Floyd, Pac, and Jr fight guys who are no risk for huge money? Now he's irrelevant at that weight and it doesn't look good to see a MW calling out a WW in public, not everyone knows he moved up or that he's a small MW. Floyd's fighting Cotto at 154, Martinez said he plans to move down, he needs to move down and beat a credible opponent, bring life into a fight between him and Floyd. Unlike everyone I'm not caught up in the whole Floyd isn't gonna fight him thing, it's 2012...
Waiting on Chavez or Canelo is useless, Lara is a good pick.Comment

It's very simple to say to go up to 168; however, you have to realize that A) Martinez is not even a real MW, he's a LMW fighting at MW; and B) all the top SMW's like Ward, Froch, and Bute cut a substantial amount of weight in order to get to 168. That would be a huge disadvantage for Martinez. It would be like watching Mayweather vs Marquez all over again... On the flip side, I also don't like hearing Martinez issuing challenges to Mayweather and Pacquiao, as those two fighters are too small for him. Especially when you have top LMW's and MW's like Martirosyan, Golovkin, Pirog, Chavez, and DeGeale out there.Comment

Fan base isn't everything. Mayweather became a star by becoming #1 p4p and having that label, he never had a big fan base until recently.Comment

I disagree. maybe his weight is low, but his power is good for a MW. Plus, he beat Pavlik, who is a big middleweight and a tremendous puncher. Bigger puncher than Ward. Sergio's speed and endurance are his best qualities and I think he can carry that to 168. Even then, Ward is a huge challenge, but its the type of challenge that makes superstarts. Beating Andre Ward would make him everyone #1, regardless of what the other 2 guys on top do. But its the type of challenge that you have to take to be a true great. OF all the guys you mentioned, he would be a favorite vs. all of them, and wouldn't help build his stock more than where it currently is.It's very simple to say to go up to 168; however, you have to realize that A) Martinez is not even a real MW, he's a LMW fighting at MW; and B) all the top SMW's like Ward, Froch, and Bute cut a substantial amount of weight in order to get to 168. [QUOTE=ManOnTheMoon;11915511]Mayweather was also fast tracked from an early age, had a lot of pub coming out of the Olympics, and has the last name Mayweather. Again even if he fights and beats Ward what next? Is he supposed to go fight Bute in Canada? Froch in England? He'll have no more mainstream respect than he has today. Boxing fanatics will have plenty of respect for him, but that's it. Ward barely has much more of a fan base than Martinez does. Martinez has knocked out 4 really solid opponents in a row, a top 10 P4P guy at the time, a top 5 JMW, an undefeated MW, and a top 5 MW, and yet he's gained nothing from it.What shots would he call? I doubt he would be favorite over Ward and I doubt he would Win! especially fighting with his hands down ohh no.I disagree. maybe his weight is low, but his power is good for a MW. Lara and Kirkland don't have a strap. Chavez is busy playing games. Sergio should fight Austin Trout, who has the WBA title and an undefeated record. Martinez has already snatched 0's from Dzinzurik and Barker, he should try and add Trout to the list. I'm SURE Trout would jump at this opportunity, especially with the bad luck he's been having with Mundine's *****-ass.Canelo will fight Floyd next--that was part of the deal to get him on the May 5th card.
Once again, Sergio is on the outside looking in. I'd love to see Sergio fight 3 times a year and clear out all the big names at 154 and 160. Lara, Kirkland, Chavez, whoever has a strap and is highly ranked.Comment
