Did Floyd dodge Cotto in 2007/2008?

Yeah, it was.
They did have a verbal agreement. But nothing was signed or sorted. They had plans for the fight and along with every single person on the planet, expected Judah to beat Baldomir and then get the Mayweather-Judah fight on the go.
As we all know, Judah lost and ****ed it up.
Mayweather had the choice to honour his verbal agreement or move on to another opponent.
He didn't have to honour it. But I understand why he did.
Do you remember that interview Margarito had back then? About being annoyed that he chose Judah over him although he was coming off a loss?
I've been trying to find it but I can't.
Naturally, it's difficult considering so much has happened since then and the main argument for the "ducking" of Margarito is when he was offered 8 million. So I'm struggling to find it.
But he wasn't the only one saying that at that time.Comment

Floyd's history since coming up in weight indicates that he is all about calculated, minimized risk with high monetary reward. That is why he tried to fight Cotto early in Cotto's career, why he dodged him in 2007/2008, and why he's making the fight now in 2012. He tried to pick off Cotto when he was still green a la Ortiz, avoided prime Cotto back in 2007/2008 due to the risk factor, and now is fighting a past-prime Cotto in 2012. That said, Cotto is still a very good fighter, and I expect he'll give Floyd problems at the least.Comment

Now, if you're saying, Floyd should've fought Margarito "before" Judah fought Baldomir instead, that's one thing.
The problem with that claim is, Arum (Floyd's promoter at the time), never offered Floyd that fight. If he did, I will gladly like to see a link to this.Comment

I don't consider Margarito a big deal. I don't rate him too highly and I'm certainly not a fan of him and I don't think he'd be much trouble for Mayweather, looking back in hindsight.
But, back then, he was considered one of the best fighters in the division and certainly the best option available for Mayweather and a genuine threat.
He was available for Mayweather and he fought others instead.
That's pure nonsense.
The #1 fighter doesn't have to chase fights. If these men were as formidable as you suggest then they would have stayed on top long enough to get their chance.
I guess by your reasoning, Floyd ducked Quintana too when Quintana upset Williams, who beat Margarito! Why didn't Floyd fight Quintana? I mean, Margarito was only champion 2 months longer than Quintana was.
Floyd should have dropped everything and rushed to Quintana's people with a signed contract, right?
You see how ridiculous that sounds? Now apply it to your argument. Its the same silly ****. It really is.Comment

You know the issue I have. Is the people who watched Legendary Nights and say Hagler was on the decline.
Nobody thought that then. Hagler was knocking out beasts and ran the show forever at 160 and they drop the line that Hagler was on the decline.
Hagler was frustrated as hell in that Leonard fight. That ***** drove him to Italy to get some Eye-talian poontang.Comment

I think, at the time, the public was wanting Floyd to fight Baldomir instead of Judah after Judah lost to Baldomir. See the Brian Kenney interview where he harrassed Floyd over making the Baldomir fight.. Floyd and Judah were lined up to fight before Judah fought Baldomir.
Now, if you're saying, Floyd should've fought Margarito "before" Judah fought Baldomir instead, that's one thing.

The fight was offered to Mayweather though. Like I just told you, I've been looking links but I can't find it, but it was offered to him. I'm surprised you don't remember.
I mean, it's not like it's an unrealistic statment either. The fight would have been very easy to make at that point.Comment

So you're suggesting that because Floyd didn't fight him in that 6 month window Antonio was champ, he ducked Margarito?
That's pure nonsense.

I'm suggesting he should have fought Margarito in 2006. Instead of Judah.
The rest of your post is some strange tangent involving Quintana and some other ****.Comment

Because according to you Williams, Margarito, Mosley, Quintana, Clottey and the rest of the WW's at that time "never did anything worth substance" in your book.
The only ones that did "anything of substance" in your book were Baldomir, Judah and Hatton.
Don't you find that odd?
So to answer your question, based on your standards, no, Cotto didn't beat anyone "formidable" to duck.Comment
