  • Is Freddie Roach overrated?

I think we can all agree, the second half of last year was a terrible on for Freddie Roach.

Manny Pacquiao got schooled again by Marquez, Linares got knocked out and Khan lost to Peterson.
What did it show us? Well despite Freddie training fighters for more then two decades, he still can't teach even the elite how to defend themselves.

Manny Pacquaio is the first to spring to mind, His speed, power and combinations are up there with the best in the business, but once backed up he can't defend himself. He has one game plan, and thats to throw a mountain of punches at awkward angles.
When Manny was struggling with Marquez, Freddie had no plan B.
Infact in several cases, I notice Freddie gets extremely nervous come fight night and does not know what to do when the going gets tough.

His fighters all seem to struggle to fight on the inside also.
Amir Khan for example this year, when Peterson got him in the inside, Khan would hold and push.
Which in some peoples minds cost him the fight.

I think the man who deserves all the credit from training camp preparation for Roachs fighters is Alex Ariza.
Where does the speed and power, that both Pacquiao and Khan possess come from?
Certainly not Freddie standing there holding mitts and wearing a body bag,
It's from Ariza's relentless training and track work.
Khan left Ariza for how long? One fight.
Why? Cause there is no strength and conditioning coach in the business like Alex Ariza.

In my opinion Freddie Roach is extremely overrated.

Uh yeah. Most PAC fans won't see it thou. And no I'm not a Floyd fan iether. Strange isn't it when there's some one who actually follows boxing & not just them 2…

Yes, his fighters can't adapt. Then he ends up begging for ko's. However Linares fought the best out of all 3 that you mentioned. His face just fell apart.

I made a comment before saying basically the same things about khan, linaires, and pacquaio. How the 3 seem to be having the same mistakes/habits.

However I don't know how much of that is Freddie's fault. It is a bit his fault but at the same time I think a lot of it has to do with those 3 training too much together and khan mimicking his friend manny to much. Freddy should separate them a bit........this to me is his fault

Freddy has other fighters that can in fight and that does not have the same bad habits of the above 3. Freddie is not a defensive trainer on top of it all, but to say he is over rated......that really depends who you talk to. I just think like every trainer out there, he has certain strengths and weaknesses when it comes to training boxers. But he is still one of the elites in the game.

                You can't be serious man.

The reason why Floyd ranting about Pac becoming great in a span of a few years. This was because of Roach's guidance.

Amir Khan would prolly be KO'd again ala-Prescott if not hooking up with Roach.

There ain't no doubt that Roach is slipping, basing on his stable of fighter's last fights, but that doesn't take away his ability as a trainer.

Look at what Roach has done for Khan. Although I suspect Ariza deserves a lot of credit too. Let's see what he can do with Khan now after his loss to Peterson. If Khan comes back and shows a good inside game en route to an impressive victory then it's a great testimony to Roach's skills.
