No, Im not. I mentioned Nicolino Locche...who was pretty unathletic and a chain smoker, and while fairly quick he really wasnt legendary when it came to speed. His defensive expertise was based around his amazing boxing IQ and perception.
fighting defensively and being defensively sound are two different things altogether. There are fighters who are offense based who actually had excellent defense...Roberto Duran and Archie Moore come to mind. and then there are guys that fight defensively whos defense really isnt so hot...ie John Ruiz.
There is just this ****** misconception that just because you fight defensively youre automatically more skilled. and thats just bull****. you can look at any amateurs, and they just tag and then try jumping out of the way again. that takes no skill. and thats what defensive fighting is in a nutshell: limiting offense and exchanges.
and I reiterate again: Im not describing all defensively sound fighters. Having excellent defense is one of the most skilled atrributes in boxing. But fighting defensively, or running, potshotting and limiting offensive exchanges...that doesnt make you skilled in the least bit.
People need to learn to differentiate between 'fighting defensively' and 'having good defense'. Theyre not the same thing.
Theres a reason why the universally recongnised best fighters of all time(SRR, Greb, Armstrong...) were primarily offensive(but still had good defense, by all means).
