not at all. 80 % (if not more) of boxing success i believ come from one's mental game.
Is the slick defensive style inherently superior?

Yeah, and there are a lot more offense first fighters than there are defensive masters. There are 10 Chico Corraleses (RIP) for every 1 Bernard Hopkins.Defensive master's seem harder to figure out and beat than the best of brawlers.
But of course, that's not always the case, at all.
There's has been plenty of examples where the brawler has beaten the defensive wizard.
Pep-Saddler brings to mind instantly.
And there's plenty more.Comment

honestly, at the top level everyone is a damn good counterpuncher/defensive fighter. even margarito to an extent.Comment

That's true, but that just shows how much harder it is to be the defensive master. It isn't as simple as one day waking up and saying to yourself, "you know what, I'm tired of having my face rearranged in every fight, I think I'm gonna become a moving, defensive boxer". It's part....hard work, part natural ability, and both combined = very effective.
James Toney could've had a few less losses if he had the discipline of a Bernard Hopkins.Comment

Yeah, it's kind of a general either/or question. There are hybrids.
There are guys like Juan Diaz, who is a good boxer and with his light punches should be more on the move. He was a decent counter puncher. But then he figured ****ing the body would break his opponents down. A Malignaggie-esque puncher scoring TKO's because he committed to the body.Comment

You're trying to be funny but you're embarassing yourself. If you think fighters are either slick or come-forward brawlers then you should just stop following this sport and do us all a favor.Comment

Not just hybrids, there are many different styles in boxing, some boxers don't even belong to any category. Guys like Pacquiao, Jones, Hamed, Augustus, Pryor, etc.Yeah, it's kind of a general either/or question. There are hybrids.
