I like this partnership,Manny is a very good trainer imo..He will work on Gamboa's defense and help him develop at a nice pace..I thought Manny did wonders for Taylor and Klitschko,I think Gamboa is more talented then both..With Manny teaching him lil tricks of the trade along the way this should work out great for Gamboa..
Side note,I really did not see this coming...Comment

romie what's good, on paper it looks great one side u have a legendary trainer and other side u have a dynamic fighter on the brink of possible superstardom but i just think eventually the same ole problems that plagued chad, cotto will come into this relationship..ie.. possible problem him going to kronk, money, pressure from his pops carlos gamboa to maybe get back in the fold sooner or later in the career. i hope it does work between them and they can make it work.
Side note, everytime I watch Broadwalk Empire I think of you(lol)being Al is one of my favs on the show...Comment

I never understood why a fighter would hire a trainer who doesn't speak the same language. I'm sure Steward can do a great job preparing Gamboa but listening to the instructions in the corner... if you think the network's translators are bad, you should hear the ones they have in their cornersComment

Big Al what's good???Where the hell ya been??I could see some problems(or bumps in the road)but I really hope not...Gamboa has to be willing to listen and learn,Manny is one of the best and with his help I think Gamboa could really be the next big thing..You never know with these young fighters tho,you know with their egos and all..But I hope these two work well together,I think Manny can patch some of the. Holes in Gamboas fight game..Mainly his defense...
Side note, everytime I watch Broadwalk Empire I think of you(lol)being Al is one of my favs on the show...
as long as the egos are kept in check , it could work out.there is some tough blockbuster matchups on the horizon and manny would do him good all areas that he needs imporvement.only time will tell.good to hear from u homie.Comment

How many fighters have you seen not succeed with Manny
All relationships between fighters and trainers don't work. I can say this about Manny, He has had more Champions and contenders originally from Detroit than almost any trainer you can think of. Thomas Hearns was just one of many great fighters that came through Kronk. What about Duane Thomas, Steve McCory, Milton McCory, David Braxton, Ricky Womack, Frank Tate, Thomas Tate, Hilmer Kenty, Bernard Super bad Mays, Jimmy Paul and he may have not been all of their original trainer but he helped with all of them. All from Detroit. This is just a few, because in the 80's people came from all over the globe to train at the Kronk. Let this be a lesson for those who don't understand his greatness!Comment

Cu****uy, You need to do some research before you go writting a post like "Salas has spent nearly his entire career training amateur fighters"
World champions literally produced from scratch........
WBC 105 Katzuto Ioka
WBA 108lb Pitchit Noi
WBA 112lb San S Ploenchit
IBF 112lb Pitchit Sitbanprachang
WBA 112lb Yoktai Sit O
WBA 118lb (2 time) Daorung Cho Siriwat
Other WC Salas has guided to a World title...
WBA 126lb Yuirorkis Gamboa
WBC 147lm Selcuk Aydin
WBA 175lb Danny Green
Salas was the 1996 WBA trainer of the year and has worked with past greats like Terry Norris and more.
The reason for the Salas/Gamboa split is Gamboa trying to reduce Salas's trainers percentage from 10% to 5%!
There you heard it 1st!

I think it's clear that Salas brought positive changes to Yuri's game; Gamboa's defense visibly improved after Ismael came on board. However, in Yuri's last couple of fights I got the feeling that, in order for him to continue his evolution as a pro, he needed a tested professional trainer.
Is Emanuel Steward the answer? I really don't know. If you asked me which high-profile trainer would be best for Gamboa, I'd immediately think Freddie Roach. I think Gamboa's talents are similar to Pacquiao's, and Freddie seems to have had some success with Manny (tongue firmly in cheek). The trouble with Roach is that he seems to have his hands full. I don't know how much time he can actually devote to Yuri. I just hope the current choice works out....Last edited by kentaro9; 10-28-2011, 12:01 AM.Comment

There's precious little information on Ismael Salas on the Internet. I confess that I'm not obsessed with getting to know every last detail about the man. I made a simple statement, "Ismael Salas has spent nearly his entire career training amateur fighters." Although this statement may not be perfectly accurate, and might have been worded differently, it is essentially true.
Back when Gamboa took Salas on again as his trainer, I did some research on Ismael (reading whatever was available). The sources I read provided the information I repeated in my earlier post. Simply because Salas has trained all these world champs "from scratch," does not make my statement incorrect. To the best of my knowledge, Salas spent the better part of his career as an amateur coach in the Cuban system. Is this not correct? You seem to know quite a bit about him. My question to you is: how many years did Salas spend as an amateur trainer and how many as a pro trainer?
I did a search on some of the names of the fighters you provided. I found next to nothing on Katzuko Ioka. I dug up one post that cites him as being 6-0 back in 2007, and one mention of him on Youtube. That's it. There is no information of Ioka on Boxrec. There is no mention of Pitchit Noi on Boxrec, either. There was one article that mentions Noi and Salas's professional success on the Internet. I know Ismael in fact trained Danny Green.
If I'm wrong in my research, then I'll gladly stand corrected. But, please, have the guts to address me using your real handle. Or at least be respectful, as a real man should.Comment
