Anyone who says 1 million+ buys is a failure is an idiot, let's get that out of the way. So then if Iole's 'sources' are correct (and apparently they were dead wrong when they told him 1.3-1.4 million) and the fight did 1 million buys... why would that be gag order worthy?

I'm not buying (get it? ) the excuse that they're not releasing the number because it did less than Pacquiao-Mosley. Mayweather-Mosley did 1.4 million buys, then Pacquiao followed up with 1.2 million against Margarito. HBO and Top Rank didn't hide that number, in fact it was published by Taffet/HBO within a week. Why was there no conspiracy then?

Also not buying the idea that they're guarding the secret because it didn't meet expectations. Schaefer ALWAYS throws out outlandish and ridiculous estimates for PPVs- he said Floyd-Shane would do 3-4 million buys, by their recent 'logic' that's a colossal failure. He predicted Floyd-Ortiz would surpass the DLH fight and then claimed 1.7-1.8 million, anyone with half a brain knew it wasn't going to sniff anything in that neighborhood.

I just don't believe it came close to 1 million buys. 1 mil would be a cause for celebration and they would tell any news outlet willing to listen of their achievement, but for some reason Mark Taffet, the head of HBO PPV is deflecting questions about HBO PPV to promoters who refuse to talk about the issue?

Doesn't sound like people sitting on 1 million buys to me, but looks like we'll never know for certain because they are going to their graves with the real buy rate.
Remember how Arum acted after Pac vs Hatton? He got angry when pressured about the numbers and refused to give them claiming that they can take months to get. It wasn't because Pac vs Hatton did poorly. In fact the fight did great numbers. I think it was because he didn't want it used against him in negotiations. Maybe thats the case here. Or maybe they want to report the highest number possible for other reasons. Who knows. But Pac vs Hatton was also a HBO PPV fight that was very successful in witch the Promoter held on the the numbers so this wouldnt be the first.

In pac shanes case, 1.3 is good except when you factor in they advertised during primetime NCAA games. The 30 sec spots cost signifcicantly more money to put on CBS in primetime then the regular advertising. So in this sense it ddn't do "well".

In floyd case he went on Conan, they replayed 24/7 on CNN. Instead of generating ppv sales these appearances seem to generate sales in movie theaters/closed circuit, where the company isn't making as much as they would if those same people bought ppv's. So in a sense it didn't do as well.

Its not just about sales its about return on investment.
Damn, you must have said something to really piss someone off. When did you go red?

People need to understand that selling a million, selling 700-800k, that's GREAT PPV numbers, especially considering most people's financial situation these days. It's disappointing to Floyd and HBO maybe, but not in the actual context of what other fighters sell. I don't think it's a guarantee at all that even Pacquiao-Mayweather would break the Floyd-Oscar record.

        Pac Mosley = 1.3 Million

        Mayweather Ortiz = 1.1 million (?) tops

man , martinez is a middleweight.

floyd ain't got to fight him.

floyd needs to fight manny and if not manny other welterweights.

if floyd wants to fight 154 and 160 guys , that's on him. not something what should expect though.

he's a 147 fighter (a small one) , as long as he keeps fighting top 147 fighters that's all good. (which mosley and ortiz was)

@latimespugmire: Sorry I'm in NBA "heaven," right now boxing fans, but I've heard pay-per-view audience for @FloydMayweather-Ortiz was just over 1 million.

@latimespugmire: HBO declined to release numbers, scratching head as to why Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy wouldn't divulge...now back to NBA!

Makes you wonder where they're getting these numbers from when the 2 guys who know won't talk about them

First they claimed their 'sources' said 1.3 or 1.4 million, now the same nameless people are claiming 1 million... but HBO and GBP are saying 'no comment'.

                  Strange situation...
