Okay, I read through the entire thread. A few things:
First off, Cuauh, thanks for being objective. Whether or not Margarito cheated against Cotto, we may not know. It’s likely, but it hasn’t been proven. However, he did have illegal inserts in the handwraps before the Mosley fight, which turned off many people, even me.
Even after stopping Cotto in 2008, I was actually looking forward to seeing Margarito’s next fight and was even rooting for him against Mosley, but when they mentioned the handwraps thing, that was the thing that did him in. You can’t blame Ricans for loathing him, it’s just that people go overboard with the deal sometimes. I can’t stand people who don’t watch boxing (at all) and feel like they’ve got a very important opinion regarding boxing matters (such is the case with friends/friends of friends, etc.)
Secondly, while Cotto DOES bruise, swell, and cut easily, I firmly believe he does so more easily post-Margarito. Whether it’s scar tissue or whatever acting up, I don’t know. How do you go from getting into wars with Torres and Corley at 140 looking clean for the most part after the fights to 147 with Judah/Mosley coming out with merely a bloody lip and some very, very slight swelling after the fights to 154…going against feather-fisted Foreman and past prime Mayorga looking all red and swollen post-fight? I might sound like I’m exaggerating, but it’s the truth. Cotto looks like he has more facial damage post-fight against Foreman than, say…Judah (who landed over 50% of power punches).
Third, I’m tempted to say Cotto will win, but the thing that is keeping me from going all in with Cotto is that Margarito despite getting pummeled into a damn near stoppage against Pacquiao, he actually went to war with him and never stopped coming forward despite how PAINFUL it must’ve been to get tagged with straight lefts on that broken cheekbone *shudders*
I honestly thought that after Cotto in 2008 and Mosley in 2009, that Margarito’s punch resistance would go down…it hasn’t. He can certainly take punches and he has shown to have a tremendous heart even when faced with someone who just would not let up (Pacquiao). Rounds 6 and 8 Margarito had tremendous success trapping Pacquiao against the ropes and working those great uppercuts which he specializes in. Balls of steel from Manny to come back from those crippling body shots and dish out some of his own punishment.
Anyway, my point is that Margarito, despite getting hammered from pillar to post by Shane, despite looking meek against García, and despite looking like pizza face against Pacquiao, he still has an iron chin and unquestionable heart. See, the thing with Margarito is that he is defensively-void just enough that his opponents start throwing all their shots upstairs and then are sapped of their energy. He has shown to be hurt quicker to the body than the head.
It’s no secret what Cotto has to do to win again. Here we are, most of us armchair experts, talking about how Cotto has to…
1-) Pace himself
2-) Stay in the center
3-) Get off the ropes
4-) Tie up
5-) Work the body if possible
6-) Work the jab and the left hook
…when in fact, he and Steward already know that. They’re working on it, Margarito ain’t a mystery. You just have to keep a cool head for 12 rounds.
Finally, with all that said, I’m confident enough to say that even if Margarito beats Cotto, it won’t be by stoppage again. That much I’m willing to bet on. There is no way Cotto goes through that again, and if it happens again, so help me God…
If Margarito wins, he redeems himself, though I don’t think he’ll be welcomed with open arms everywhere no matter how good he looks. As usual, credit will be given where credit is due, and I will give credit to Margarito if he DOES win again. I still don’t think he’ll have a long career after this, though.
Neither Cotto nor Margarito will be the same. What these guys have been through in the first fight was just nasty…
SUMMARY:
1-) Credit to the victor.
2-) Neither will have much of a career after this fight.
3-) The ANTICIPATION of this fight will be greater than the fight itself.
4-) Burning Question: “Will Margarito’s FACE hold up after what’s he been through?” Not the same as heart or chin, this is the face we’re talking about…
5-) Observational note: I agree with Cuauh in that Steward hasn’t changed Cotto that much. Cotto is Cotto. A consistent bully with decent boxing skills that dislikes pressure, nothing will change that. I’m not saying Steward’s done nothing with Cotto, I’m just saying that people are acting like Steward is the messiah and that he will do spectacular things with Cotto, he won’t.
6-) Cotto isn’t getting stopped again. This is my fourth time posting this…does anybody want to bet 1 million points that Cotto DOES NOT get stopped again?

I'm not going to get into whether Margs had ilegal wraps for the Cotto fight again ! Maybe he did maybe he didn't ? What I don't get is fans who state Margs didn't have plaster on his chin ? As to conclude Cotto couldn't knock him out ! Well if the illegal wraps were in place that night that mountain would have thwarted his efforts don't cha think ? To those of you who are under the impression well Miguel cotto lumps up easy and has plenty of scar tissue. Well there was no evidence of this pre Margs. Pros or Amateurs. If illegal wraps where in place that night wouldn't you think Cotto would be more susceptible of sustaining damage as he has in his last 3 out of 4 fights ? Well things that make you go HMMM I guess ?Comment

The second fight doesn't prove anything about the first fight. They have both declined since then and both taken a lot of punishment in the past 3 years.Comment

I would also love to have a beer and watch a fight with you, you know your boxing and are objective, not like these ***in pricks around here.
I do disagree with you that Marg won't stop Cotto, I think in the first fight Marg was a just a little bit too respectful of Cotto and when you heard him say in the 6th round "I'm going to knock him out" and his trainer telling him "I know, I know but be careful" I knew at that moment that Marg knew, that Cotto couldn't hold up to his shots and pressure.
I will take that bet with you Tinta, no problem and personally, I don't care who wins. Part of me even would like to see Cotto win and redeem himself, I just think that Marg to Cotto is what Junior Jones was to Barrera......Comment

Margo is always going to be a bad matchup for Cotto. I do believe Margo is probably too washed up at this point, but he will continue to come forward at all times and make it hard on Cotto. It's the reason Cotto never wanted a fight with PW. PW is just a taller, faster Margo.Comment

Bro, that **** still hurts me. I can't believe the way Pac just dismantled Barrera.
The Barrera vs Morales fights were scored backwards if you ask me, Barrera won the first and lost the second, even though they were backwards, they evened out in the end I guess.
