Of course, Mayweather's fans are quick to jump to defend him, but at least speaking for myself, I've never discredited Mayweather's ability in the ring because he's a special fighter. But are we supposed to ignore the fact that he sat on the sidelines when the Welterweight division was at a fever pitch? Who here would'nt have salivated over a Margarito vs Mayweather match or Cotto vs Mayweather? We can talk about the business side of things all day, but some of the best fighters in history, though were heavily paid, are still remembered for the guys they've fought. Floyd's a HOF no question, but the last several years of his career has been one more of being an entertainer outside the ring than putting on memorable performances in the ring against the sport's best. Win or lose, Cotto's fought the best of the best and still only has 2 losses.

All the fighters you mentioned are top rank fighters. The president of top rank refuses to do business with floyd mayweather because floyd is no longer employed by top rank. The divison was not a hot bed just because these four were promoted by Bob.

the best of the best?..he fought Shane when Shane had no title came down in weight from 154lbs...that was a month before Mayweather fought Hatton and retired....

then Cotto fights Alfonso Gomez...(hes a great WW?)
then hes busted up and quits vs Margarito ( a guy who was just hyped by bob arum and was caught cheating)

        then he fights Michael Jennings?
then he struggles vs Clottey? Who has Clottey ever beat @WW that mattered?
Then he loses to Pac, who wasnt even a WW until that fight

so lets recap... Mosley dropping down in weight from 154, Alfonso Gomez, Margarito, Michael Jennings, Clottey & Pac?

one thing about all those guys is they all lost their big fights except for Manny.....Margaritos failed vs EVERY Major opponent except for Cotto....lol...

Hotbed of boxing my ass...that was just Bob Arum Hype..isnt it a coincidence that all these guys are Top Rank fighters...lol

I don't think it makes a difference what promotional team they were apart of because in the end, it's all about money. Floyd knows the Boxing business and saw he could make more money fighting guys like Oscar and Hatton for more w/ less risk. The demand for the De La Hoya rematch obviously wasn't there and the only option from there would be the winner of Cotto vs Margarito which possibly would've paid less and was a bigger risk. Do I think he was literally afraid of Cotto, Margarito, or even Pacquiao? Absolutely not. But him being business minded he's obviously not trying to prove who's the best, so why take a risk?

The Pacquiao fight is the one instance where the risk and reward both match evenly.

In general yes. But not in this case. Bob wouldn't do business with floyd because he left top rank and then sued Bob. Floyd wasn't going to do any business with top rank. Period!

The fighters you mentioned are viewed in a higher light because floyd didn't fight them. That would be ok if floyd refused to fight them like Bowe did Lennox or Bradley just did with Khan. The truth is these guys promoter was pissed he spent considerable resources to build floyd into a viable (ie 250-350k sales) ppv fighter, then he left him to make huge money.

Floyd fighting for the unified WW title and then ODH for the JMW title (and $25 mil) doesn't make clottey, marg, cheato, and manny great fighters that floyd ducked.

To each his own. To me, Floyd beating Baldmoir and his check for the Oscar fight aren't what Boxing is going to remember more than Floyd's overall body of work (which IMO would've been boosted with wins over Cotto, Margarito let alone Pacquiao). Ray Leonard made a killing at the box office, but he's remembered for who he fought. Floyd obviously hasn't fought chumps by any means on his way up, but let's face it, he took the road that paid more and had less risk once he reached the top. It's easy to say Arum didn't want to put anymore money into Floyd's pocket considering the fact. But even that isn't enough to stop Arum from making money for himself as well.
