Manny Pacquiao became FOTD mainly for beating a 36 year old De La Hoya at 147, a weight he hadn't made in 10 years. With a win over 140 lineal champion Hatton and Cotto at a catchweight to top off the decade. Before that, his best wins were Barrera, Morales, and Marquez.

Hopkins decade end wins were undefeated Pavlik, shot Jones. Before that, his best wins were undefeated Tito Trinidad, 175 The Ring champion at LHW Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, and Oscar De La Hoya.

Pacquiao got his first big upset win in 2003 against Barrera.

Hopkins got his first big upset win against an undefeated Trinidad in 2001.

Pacquiao's second high profile fight, he fought to a Draw against Marquez in 2004, Pacquiao's third high profile fight, he lost against the underdog Morales in 2005.

Hopkins second biggest fight, he beat Joppy, which is not much. Hopkins third high-profile fight, he beat De La Hoya.

Finally, Pacquiao gets a big win after going 3 years without winning a high profile fight, he knocks out Morales in 2006. Pacquiao ends the year by knocking out Morales again in another high profile win.

Back to Hopkins. Hopkins meanwhile, is having trouble with undefeated former Olympian Jermain Taylor, losing twice against him in 2005. Hopkins follows up those two losses by moving up 15lbs to upset The Ring LHW champion Antonio Tarver. Followed by another big fight against Winky Wright.

Back to Pacquiao. Pacquiao slugs it out against Marquez in a big PPV fight, and beats him. Pacquiao ends the year with an upset win over Oscar De La Hoya, in Pacquiao's biggest fight of his career.

Back to Hopkins. Hopkins meanwhile, loses a decision to the undefeated Joe Calzaghe, and follows it up with an upset win over undefeated Kelly Pavlik.

Pacquiao stars of 2009 with a big win over 140 lineal champion Ricky Hatton, followed by a win at a catchweight fight against WBO WW champion Miguel Cotto, to end the 2000 decade.

Hopkins finishes off the decade by beating Ornelas in 2009, with his sole fight/win that year.

I think it's pretty obvious, Pacquiao is the best fighter of the decade.

BUT, Hopkins is starting off this decade with a **** so far.

pretty obvious? Its pretty even, if anything.

Hopkins was earlier in the decade the better fighter, while Pac was later. to sum it up.

I also gave Pac the edge.

If there is a p4p best old fighter, then BH is your man.
But Pac is this generations best fighter. BH is hanging around and can afford to wait for these weak champions to come along, to use his experience against.

If the champs are strong he can by pass them, or take them on and lose, but its no big deal cos hes supposed to lose at his age. He is in a win win situation.

I broke down there resume as unbiased as I can. I think Hopkins is the greater fighter, and the better P4P fighter and also fought the more diverse style of opponents/quality opponents, while Pacquiao has been known throughout his career to fight only one style.

Hopkins two losses to Taylor, and loss to Calzaghe, basically hindered his chances for getting FOTD. But that alone, those 3 fights, Hopkins fought 2 guys that were 91-0 together[Taylor twice 23-0, 24-0, Calzaghe 44-0], and lost 3 disputed decisions against them. Plus two guys that had completely different styles.

Pacquiao will never and has never fought an elite undefeated fighter. But as far as 2000-2009 resume goes between B-Hop and Pacquiao, i'll go with Pacquiao, although you are right about Pacquiao having the better resume in one part of the decade and Hopkins in the other part. A win over Taylor, and, if he would have gotten the nod against Calzaghe, there wouldn't have been an argument here, Hopkins would have been FOTD.
