& he's RIGHT!!! Besides Gomez being a 3 division world champ(jr feather, feather & jr lightweight)he also has the record for the most defenses at jr featherweight(122lbs)with 17 successful defenses & ALL BY KO!!! Gomez ended with a record of 44-3-1-42KO's & 23 of those fights were world title fights & his record in word championship fights was 20-3-18KO's!! & Gomez has the record for the longest uninterrupted title reign at jr featherweight(5 years, 10 months) Gomez was also a Amateur World Champion winning Gold in Havana, Cuba(1974) & winning ALL the fights by KO!!He KO'd 3 fighters in 2 rounds & 1 in 1 round!! Among them was the favorite to win the Gold in his weight class, Cuban amateur champion Luis Jorge Romero...He's DEFINITELY the best Puerto Rican fighter of all time!! & 2 of his 3 losses came to Hall of Famers Salvador Sanchez & Azumah Nelson..The other was to Panamanian Alfredo Layne at just about the end of Gomez's career..It's gonna be REAL hard for ANY other Boricua fighter to at least MATCH those credentials, never mind trying to TOP them!!!
A few weeks ago(before the Juanma/Salido fight) arrogant swollen headed Juanma would have said he was the best ever!! & he actually believed it, until Salido gave him a reality check!!
Benitez, Gomez, Ortiz, Trinidad...those are four serious names. I have a soft spot for Carlos; he's old-school, and a nice guy, from what I gather. But Gomez has to get the nod, as you so aptly argued. My opinion: 1- "Bazooka", 2- Carlos, 3- "Tito", 4- "El Radar".
It's too bad that Carlos Ortiz seems to be forgotten among Puerto Rican boxing fans. He was a great champion, someone to be proud of. Trinidad is the most recent Boricua great, so it's natural that many will think very highly of him. Benitez was known more for his supernatural ability and defensive wizardry. The more powerful punchers tend to inspire awe, but Wilfred was a special boxer. He's semi-forgotten, a fact made even sadder by the knowledge that he's in bad financial and medical shape.Comment

I gotta say I disagree with Cotto, I think Carlos Ortiz is the best fighter out of Puerto Rico...Carlos Ortiz was a REAL world champion when there werent all these sanctioning bodies, just one champion (he did that twice), He was the inaugral WBC lightweight champion, he also won the WBA title. The main reason I pick Ortiz over Gomez and even Trinidad is becuase every time he lost his titles he won them back against the same person who beat him...plus Trinidad and Ortiz are the only fighters from PR to win fighter of the year awardsComment

That's easy... Because puertoricans have the greatest ratio per capita of boxing champions by a huge margin in the world. Mexico has 110+ million ppl in Mex compared to 3.5 million in PR. One more thing, puertoricans have won lot more fights against mexicans in title fights... They cannot accept that...Last edited by Dlostx; 05-01-2011, 07:18 PM.Comment

Its actually kinda flattering to be honest. It shows how great we really are since it is such a great accomplishment for a Mexican to beat a Puerto Rican Champion. Lol.Last edited by King Ju-Ju; 05-01-2011, 07:47 PM.Comment
