Might seem like an odd thing to start discussing, but a really subtle and on-point portrayal of a mentally handicapped character is Toby Kebbell's 'Anthony' in a British flick called Dead Man's Shoes. I'd recommend checking that one out if you haven't, as it's a great film besides.

To keep it vaguely relevant to the fistic theme, the lead villain (Sonny) is played by ex-prizefighter Gary Stretch (the boxing gloves hanging on Sonny's living-room wall give a sly nod to this).

Well he was only about 85 when he made that commentary. Relatively young. He's about 90 now and may have calmed down!

        Apparently not.

As for the quote, I was going on memory. Maybe you're right. I just love De Niro's response, though, it's like he just forgets what he was upset about and becomes more concerned about who's "bigger". lmao

Don't get the wrong impression, but here's a website with quotes on the DeNiro/Moriarity squablle that led to beating up poor Joe Pesci:

Thanks for the tip. I looked it up on IMDB.com. Looks like it has a decent rating. I'll check it out.

Thanks. I also just read on Wiki, and it said that in 2009, both Houses of Congress sent a parodn request to Pres. *****. It implies he did not sign it.

Book stated that Pesci character was really his friend, not his brother. Jake had ****d women, and wrote that he was impotent unless he was raping. And thought he had beaten someone to death who he robbed. He got away with attempted murder on that one.

So he was even worse character than portrayed. But that's part of what a great Hollyowood flick can do--create sentimentality for otherwise de****able characters. For me Bull also has great music as well as visuals.

I recommend the special edition though to hear all LaMotta's comments. I guess Vicki was the love of his life. He says, (when they show Cathy Moriarity), "yeah this girl's beautiful, but Vicki, COME ON." And then goes on how all kinds of people, including the rich and powerful were always hitting on her and drove the 2 apart.

You gotta love the guy who still thinks she was the most gorgeous woman on earth. She was beautiful from the pics I saw of her when young.

Jake I think is about to be 90 or such. Amazing like Chuvalo.
For me, it's not so much that they changed or omitted some facts per se.

It's just their misdirected interpretation of LaMotta and how they ultimately made him appear soulless (which, for all he did wrong, I don't believe is true). Although De Niro clearly nailed some part of him, his mannerisms and what have you, I feel they did him wrong on a deeper level, especially in the younger years.

It's only one of many complaints I had in that respect, but I already recalled Marty projecting his Catholicism onto Jake, which may seem minor, but was quite repugnant of Marty to do, IMO. Again, I'd really need to go back and examine both book and film to more closely articulate more of what I'm talking about here.

I love what you put in the bold, BTW. Moriarty is far and away the best thing about the movie, to me.

LaMotta, the extant human being that we have now, is incredible...agreed.

Great discussion in here, FWIW. One of the best threads I've read in NSB in a while.
