I do wonder if people who have The Fighter as their #1, have seen Raging Bull, The Hurricane, and other films.

For me, I thought The Fighter was good, but the two I just cited were vastly better.
I do wonder if you saw my top 3 earlier in the thread? I wouldn't call any one of them vastly better than the others in that list. They are 4 great boxing movies, imo.

I have Raging Bull on dvd. I like it alot. It makes my top 4. I liked The Fighter and Ali better and have RB tied with Cinderella Man (which was just a little too syrupy for me for it to get any further up my list) for 3rd.

Don't think I caught the Hurricane now that I'm thinkin' about it, although I'm passingly familiar w/the subject matter.

I'll give it a look in the next little while based on the recommendations in this thread. Thanks.

            1) Raging Bull. IMO the best sports movie ever.
            2) Million Dollar Baby. Extremely depressing, but completely worth it.
            3) Rocky. The sequels rob this movie of what made it great, but on it's own it is still really damn good.

              Very original plot.
              Excellent subplots.
              Really good, gritty boxing knowledge.
Clint Eastwood and Morgan ****ing Freeman.
Surprisingly underrated movie. It works on nearly every level. Only thing stopping it from damn near perfection is that it is a very depressing movie.

I own it, and elements of it are just great.

But did you not find some of the boxing aspects "off"? From the final fight being so over the top--so many massive fouls, that the fight would have been stopped well before the last foul.

And Freeman states that a KO comes (only is implied) from twisting of the neck or such. No mention of rattling of the brain against the skull which far more often causes a KD or KO. There's more, but still a great movie, if yes depressing.

Hollywood is fictionalized, and Million Dollar Baby did as admirable a job as you can expect as far as the actual fight scenes went. It also tried to present a more brutal side to the sport, which is why that final fight scene had so many fouls without a DQ. They weren't showing HBO prime time type fights. It was out there but it was still about as good as you can expect from a movie.

And regarding "Ali", I thought it was a fine movie, as far as it went. If it was very good, it is because the subject matter is so fascinating. My probllem with it is that they left so much out of it. Some I understand was due to legal threats.

It could have been so much more than it was, IMO. Still a fine movie due to Ali's fascinating life.
