lol Sounds cool, huh? Actually, I'd like to be champion of the world at almost anything. lol But, there's just something about the words the "Heeeeaaaaavyweight Champiiiiiiooon of the Wooooooooorld!"

There's a compilation of CDs by my favorite jazz musician, the legendary John Coltrane (1926-1967). You know what it's entitled? "The Heavyweight Champion." That says something. Everyone knows what that means. If you called it "The Welterweight Chamion," people would be like, "Wha?" lol

lol, yeah thats true. u always hear the heavyweights brought up in other sports too when u got like two teams going at it. for ex. commentators be like "this is a like a heavyweight fight with two guys going blow for blow." it would be weird to hear "this is like a welterweight fight with two guys going at it"

Naturally, HISTORICALLY, the Heavyweight Div is the one since from the beginning of boxing, or let us say pugilism (which at one time also included a bit of wrestling and quarterstaff fighting) it was the ONLY weight, and you had 140-50 pounders fighting against 200 pounders.

The next most historic weight, in my opinion, is the Middleweight Div. since there are many instances of middleweights (which were around 130 lbs in them thar days) fighting heavyweights. Bob Fitzsimons is a good example.

My opinion has nothing to do with my personal preference, but as it happens, I have NO personal preference, it depends completely on the fighter himself as to whom I like, no ,atter what the weight. I used to like (pop eyed) Peter Kane of Golbourne, and he was a flyweight-bantamweight. A top class fighter. I once sparred with Jackie Patterson who took the title from Peter ane, but I never did like him. Besides, he hit me a terrific wallop in the stomach, which made me like him even less.
But he came to train for a world title fight in our gym and I was closest to his weight and the local champ. He showed me I really knew little about REAL fighting. I knew plenty about "boxing", but that wasn't what he did.

Ask any boxing historian what the most deep and historic divisions are they will tell you; Lightweight, Welterweight and Middleweight.

Try writing a HW list then see how much easier that is than it is to write a Lightweight, Welterweight or Middleweight list.

The HW division may have been the deepest in the 70's but historically?

Not even close to those 3 divisions.
