I do agreee that Eastern European boxers have done a lot better in the past 20 years, no doubt about it...but to completely dismiss the rise in NBA and NFL as to why there are no great American champions, IMO, isnt right......Comment

I don't see any relation between the two things, is Ali only considered by many the greatest HW ever because some footballer or basketball player picked their sports instead of boxing? I think its laughable to suggest something like that and equally laughable to suggest the same thing today about the K-bros and other dominant Euro fighters.Comment

No because many athletes who compete in both sports exibit athletism that could be used in boxing....many of the greatest fights of all time have been great athletes........I don't see any relation between the two things, is Ali only considered by many the greatest HW ever because some footballer or basketball player picked their sports instead of boxing? Like I said...a lot of people say the reason why Roy Jones became shot so early was because he relied too much on his athletism, rather than his boxing skills...but no one is ready to admit that great physical specimens in the NBA and NFl could have been boxers (who good, im not sure) had they persued it....and its only a discussion becasue America used to be great at it....so I dont want to hear the argument about soccer because soccer countries never had a great tradition in boxing..........Comment

Roy had his own specific technique that worked for him, may have been unorthodox but it worked and you post as if there are many examples if Roy Jones's out there. He is an exception not the rules, no one I suspect will come along like him for some time.No because many athletes who compete in both sports exibit athletism that could be used in boxing....many of the greatest fights of all time have been great athletes........

Boxing doesn't depend solely on athletic ability there are other attributes not visible that need to be present which football and basketball lets be honest because they are much easier don't bring out.
Again though you are using the argument about an American fighter who doesn't exist who could be great if he did.
Couldn't I do the same about some random Euro guy in Ali's time beating him if he existed?Comment

its....sort of true. but still an excuse.
fact is that if there wasnt the NFL or basketball in the USA, and boxing had more emphasis among big guys, there WOULD be more top HWs from America. thats not too farfetched, right?
but thats just silly speculation. fact is, a top American fighter just doesnt exist at HW, because those NFL guys have 0 boxing skill.
that goes for any country. If China tomorrow made boxing its national sport and every child in China started boxing, I can tell you right now that China would be flat out dominating boxing in 20 years.
more emphasis on boxing=producing better fighters. simple as that. and virtually any country can use that same 'excuse'.Comment

Ya Boxing in America has decreased because basketball, football and baseball's popularity have increased, It may not be written but think about it, IMHO the top athletes in either football or basketball could compete with any current HW champ, had they had the proper training... just off body stats alone id take a trained Blake Griffin 6'10 250 or Dwight(most athletic big man ever) Howard 7'0 260 over 6'6 240 Wlad or 6'7 250 Vitali any day...
So the fact that there are just 2 major HWs right now from overseas dominating doesn't account for the other 10 contenders being of mixed origins who could lose at any point and wouldn't necessarily be prohibited favorites over a top American or any-other fighters.. Povetkin v Adamek would produce a loser Tony Thompson v Eddie Chambers would to, does that automatically mean the winner from the 1st fight would beat the winner of the 2nd because American boxing isnt where it use to be!!!???
Its a matter of time before a new face emerges in the HW division and he could be from anywhere, that's, how boxing works... we (americans) get better in basketball, football and baseball the rest of the world is taking over boxing because Americans interest in participating isnt where it use to be. The other division are swarmed with Americans worth mentioning, but the fact .. HW embodies big 200 plus men, there interest are in what is introduced to early in life football, basketball, baseball track n field... Boxing unlike in Europe isnt a school activity or sport, if it was things may be different!!!Last edited by GreatestIam; 03-12-2011, 06:04 PM.Comment
