promoter wants me to fight" Berto/Cotto would have been
a good match up for both. 1. to test Berto skills as an elite
and to help build Cotto back up by beating the young champion.
    I wouldn't mind seeing Berto/Williams as well.
I don't like Berto and think he's coddled by HBO, but I can't criticize the dude over something he aint got no control over. Just like is the case with Cintron, the Collazo fight is hard to make too because Collazo is hard to deal with and I heard that Berto was willing to rematch him but Collazo did that thing of pricing himself out of the fight and going inactive. And Clottey showed everybody what a joke he was when he fought Pacquiao and HBO don't want him back on their air either and I don't blame them.

Call me crazy, but I actually would rather Berto go back to the negotiating table with Randall Bailey than give Victor Ortiz a shot for two reasons. One, Bailey is more of a legit Welterweight now. And even if he is not as skilled as Ortiz, he's also not as fragile where will is concerned even though his chin is probably still weak. And his power would make the fight with Berto semi interesting.

Ortiz has become a safety first fighter now who doesn't create exciting fights and say what you want about Berto, but outside of the clinching he does he's had some exciting fights like the one with Estrada and Collazo. His fan base sucks compared to Victor's, but HBO shouldn't invest in a guy who is gonna fight scared either which is what Ortiz has been doing.

I'm not saying the Bailey fight is good or the Ortiz fight is for that matter, but how can we criticize Berto for something he doesn't have any control over as far as quality opponents being available?

Yep, I agree 100%. Winning a title fight at catch-weight must be similar to what it would be like ***ing your own sister.

      You know it's wrong.....
You know you shouldn't do it.....
      It opposes history.....
      It opposes all traditional values.....
      It opposes common-sense.....
And when you've finished, it just wouldn't feel right.....

The manner of that loss really set Ortiz back. He still needs a couple of fights before Maidana imho, then if he wins, I'd love to see him fight Khan.

      • I don't get why Ortiz wants a catchweight...dude is big and has already fought at welterweight quite a few times hasn't he?

I can't really argue with you guys, and it could be a good fight.....
..... but I just don't think that Williams belongs at WW.

I certainly don't think that 147 is his most effective weight.

It could be his best chance of success, e.g. use his height/reach to overwhelm/outpoint smaller opponents..... but I personally think that he needs to settle on - at least - 154, he needs to get some pop on his punches, and he needs to iron out the problems with his style. It is not just a defence issue with Paul, he doesn't fight to his strengths, and he does not adapt to his opponent.

He's still dreaming about a Mayweather/Pacquiao payday, and it aint gonna happen. He needs to concentrate on 154 and try to clean it out imho.

BTW, Happy New Year Chief, all the best

I'm pretty sure that I've watched every Ortiz fight over the last few years and I can't recall him fighting at welter, maybe earlier in his career, but I actually thought I heard him talking about an old fight at lightweight in an interview a couple of years back? Not sure.

            Either way, catch-weight's suck

They should be completely abolished from top level boxing, and only ever take place in exhibition bout's, like was first intended. They are a joke.

Didn't he just fight at Welterweight vs Vivian Harris might have been a catchweight though.

              • Ortiz should stay the hell away from Berto, I can't believe GBP is sacrificing this kid to the Haitian Sensation.

I don't remember the weights, maybe it was a catch-weight? I think of Harris as a JWW so I mighta just assumed. Weight has become too much of an issue, and this catch-weight rubbish has to stop.

Canelo's trainer recently stated that the reason why they often fight at 150, is to extend Saul's career by not having to work so hard to make 147.

Sometimes I think that half the fighters these days would be crap fighting under the original divisional system. They would either kill themselves making an uncomfortable weight, or p1ss themselves in the ring.

I wasn't having a dig at Canelo then, I like the kid, and I think he's being groomed near perfectly..... I was just making an example of how weight manipulation is much more common under a system with twice as many divisions.

                  • After that **** he pulled in the Williams fight, Cintron has to do alot more than call Berto out to get back on HBO!

Me personally, I never want to see that clown on a HBO broadcast again untill redeems himself by going on some type of winning streak.

This dude straight stole money, and now he is trying to come back for more.

                    • What would Paul Williams have achieved, and how highly would he be regarded, had he fought under the original 8 divisions?
