And Rod Douglas, what a shame .. people remember Watsons career being cut short but Rod Douglas was a huge prospect until Benn beat him .. I think Rod had 100+ wins in the amateurs with only four losses and won a Gold medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games..
Rod won the ABA's in 83, 84, 85 and 87 .. he became the first man to ever beat the seemingly invincible Nigel Benn, doing so in the final of the West Ham divs in 85 .. in the West Ham divs final of 86 they met again, with Benn avenging his defeat by knocking down Douglas a few times and getting the win ..
Douglas' first ever loss came against Iran Barkley in the quarters of the world championships in 1982 .. but he then beat Michael Watson two yrs in a row at both the 83 and 84 West Ham divs finals and those who witnessed the Douglas vs. Watson amateur fights say that it was boxing of the very highest level .. Douglas's second loss had come at the 83 europeans final against some eastern european guy and he claimed that he was robbed .. and his fourth loss came when he was absolutely robbed against Shawn O'Sullivan at the 1984 Olympic Games ..
I really would love to see those legendary West Ham divs finals of 83, 84, 85 and 86 featuring Watson vs. Douglas in 83 and 84 finals, and Douglas vs. Benn in 85 and 86 finals .. anybody know if there is any footage anywhere ..??
I feel sorry for Douglas, he was the top boy for so long before Benn came along and owned him and then all the attention focused on Benn. Benn went on to dominate the ABA's in 86 (after getting rid of Douglas at the divs) live on the BBC and developed a big fan base, you know people always think back to Michael Watson as the guy who had his career cut short and the guy who was the one who didn't recieve the attention he deserved etc, but what about ****ing Rod Douglas? He was shaping up to be real good in the pro's, but I think his people pushed him into the Herol Graham fight a little too quickly.
I remember Eubank was set to fight Victor Cordoba in France for the WBA title, that was until the public demanded that he rematched Watson and so Eubank pulled out of the Corboda fight at the last minute to give Watson the rematch that every body thought he deserved
Looking at Cordoba's record, Cordoba fought a lot of the same guys who Eubank fought such as Anthony Logan, Randy Smith, José Carlos Da Silva and Jean-Noel Camara.
I haven't actually ever seen Cordoba fight, was he any good? He probably wasn't in Eubank's class, but that's no shame.
And I remember after the Watson tragedy, Eubank retired from boxing. Nigel Benn and Michael Nunn were due to fight for Eubank's vacated WBO super-middleweight title in December 1991, but then at the last minute Eubank decide to carry on boxing and not retire, Benn and Nunn were pissed.
****ing hell, José Carlos Da Silva had his hands full didn't he??
He fought Victor Cordoba, Chris Eubank, Gerald McClellan, James Toney and Reggie Johnson all in a row: http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=070026
Looking at Cordoba's record, Cordoba fought a lot of the same guys who Eubank fought such as Anthony Logan, Randy Smith, José Carlos Da Silva and Jean-Noel Camara.
Gary Stretch had good potential .. he came along as an unknown amateur and knocked out 67-0 George Collins and remember Collins was called "britain's best ever prospect" .. George Collins, yet another british talent who fell short bigtime, I really thought he would be great .. what the heck happened to that guy ..?
I just found the following on George Collins -
But to end on a cautionary tale of how it can all go wrong, let me tell you about George Collins.
Collins had 78 amateur fights, won 77 and was one of the best amateurs of the 1980s.
He turned pro at the age of 17, not unlike Amir who is 18, and everyone thought Collins was going to take the pro game by storm.
But Collins failed on the biggest stage and was finished by the age of 22.
However, Warren will have learned from the mistakes he made with Collins and develop Amir at the right pace.
I haven't actually ever seen Cordoba fight, was he any good? He probably wasn't in Eubank's class, but that's no shame.
A tricky southpaw if I remember rightly .. he was above average certainly but not as good as a Eubank or a Benn or a Toney or a RJjnr or a McLennan .. although Victor did do well against Nunn the first time and a draw would of been a fair result but we all know that Nunn was inconsistent since the Kalambay fight ..
Anthony Logan (WBC Continental Americas Champion, battered Nigel Benn), Hugo Corti (WBC International Champion), Nigel Benn (WBO World Champion, WBC World Champion), Gary Stretch (British Champion, "better than Calzaghe" says the man who fought them both), Michael Watson (Commonwealth Champion), Thulane Malinga (WBC World Champion), Ronnie Essett (NABF Champion), Tony Thornton (USBA Champion), Lindell Holmes (IBF World Champion), Graciano Rocchigiani (IBF World Champion, WBC World Champion), Henry Wharton (British/Commonwealth/European Champion)
??
Looks pretty reasonable, ****ty? no true boxing fan would dream of saying such bollocks!
P.S Anthony logan didnt batter Benn, He clocked him, went in for the kill and ended up getting KTFO himself, all in the space of the first 3 minutes!
There is a term that is censored on this forum....but I will re-phrase it. It's called Eurogarbage. You see the guy in my avatar? He is the exception along with Lennox Lewis in not being classified in that way....because of their wins over quality opposition who fought in the United States of America.
Toney: "You're sloppy boy. You're European"
Says it all. Britain should stick to Cricket......for real.
On a general level....Hatton is semi acceptable having beaten a washed up fighter in Tszyu.....but when he faces a guy like PBF or Cotto. Forget about it.
hahaha what a thread to bump, look at the s**t spewing out of this guys mouth
