Comments Thread For: A Note on Khan vs. Maidana: Overly Involved Joe Cortez

I would like to say that I am not a Khan fan nor a hater and I was pretty much a neutral observer. And after his interview before the fight I found myself intrigue with Khan and was even pulling for him to win the fight. However, I did find it rather strange that HBO pretty much ignored Maidana. No interview or information on him before the fight, why? Does no one at HBO speak Spanish? With all that said Joe Cortez did an absolutely horrible job of officiating. And it ranks as one of the worst I have seen in recent memory. And not only because of the unnecessary breaks. I also thought that on a few occasions Joe was manhandling Maidana way to much. And I really believe that the elbow was intended for Joe because of the manhandling. It was also not that much of an elbow and may have deserved a warning but certainly not a point deduction. There was also mention of Maidana throwing rabbit punches. And from what I watched Khan was getting beat up pretty good and he looked as if turned his back on his opponent. So what was Maidan supposed to do? And I have seen fights stopped when that has happened. The last thing was that Joe warned Khan enough times for pushing down on Maidana that I believe it warranted a point deduction. In the end I thought that it was a great fight with a horrible job of officiating. I also believe that Khan is going be in trouble if he ever fights a fighter with decent boxing skills that has some power.Comment

they didn't ignore Maidana if you watch the fight there were constantly praising Maidana for showing heart and keep coming forwardComment

…has nothing to do with his nationality man…he’s just a bad ref…too many refs that work a major fight make it about them….it’s like they crave the spotlight or something..I still can’t believe this dude got into the hall of fame…..anyways, Maidana had Kun ( like Roy kept pronouncing it) on the run in the 10th…Kun is far from being the best at 140….if that’s what a slow Maidana can do to him, Bradley will mop the floor with him as soon as they meet….Comment

Kun(t) should not have been turning his sissy ass around like that and hanging on to Maidana's arm for dear life ..the rules clearly state "protect yourself at all times" (and I would add), otherwise, take your beating like a b*tch....but Joe “oh-I’m-a-movie-star-please-pay-attention-to me!” Cortez had to jump in and disrupt the action because he’s an attention whore…
had Maidana been in better shape, he would've taken him out..but hey, coulda' woulda' shoulda', huh?....and that body shot Kun landed was HELLACIOUS, I was shocked Maidana was able to get up and survive that...Comment

is that supposed to be 'journalism'? cortez's involvement was nothing like in the hatton mayweather fight.
and as for that elbow..slo-mo shows it was thrown with intent and it was probably fact that it hit cortez that he lost the point because cortez felt the intent behind it. had nothing to do with being spun around. what a poor article.Comment

joe cortez made watching that fight very difficult, everytime maidana was inside, that sucker khan would hold him over and over again, cortez would rush to assist....in retrospect, i wish maidana would have landed that elbow on cortez' temple and sent him out of that fight....cortez says "i'm fair but I'm firm"....its pure nonsense....cortez, think everyone is there to see him and its a shame, i use to respct him, but now he's become a celebrity seeking status ref, and its not good for boxing.......maidana, deserved a fair referee in there not Cortez......
khan didn't impress me.....funny thing he hurts naidana to the body and doesn't go back to that body attack to finish the fight...and roach is supposed to be a great trainer/advisor and he too says nothing to khan about sustaining the body attack....roy jones and even that ahole jim lampley made reference to why khan abandoned the body attack........speaking of lampley, that guy is such an unfair commentator, all he saw were khan punches, he very very rarely gave credit to the work that maidana was doing......i think a rematch is certainly called for.....
also larry merchant gets to interview khan asks him one question and the interview is over...all week we've read cooments from khan and all of a sudden we dont hear him call anyone out...poor job by merchantComment

I dont know wtf is it with boxingscene they come out with the ******est articles ever. Why not mention cortez could of taken points when he called break and maidana kept hitting khan?? Why not mention he could of gotten dq after round 10 when he kept throwing blow after blow after the bell had rung. Cause if cortez was fair he would of dq him same way he did to soto.
There was also a moment in the middle rounds where cortez called break and pull them apart and maidana landed 2 blows to maidana and cortez shook his head he should of deducted another point instead rewarning him. If ur gonna state what the ref was doing why not state how many point deductions maidana should of gotten. The guy is nothing but garbage a dirty ass fighter look at the cayo fight how he lands a bomb on him after the bell had rung. The guy always looks for cheap shots like he did on the 10th after the bell had clearly rung and he continued hittingComment
