Maidana was clearly throwing an elbow behind him intended for Khan out of being so annoyed, that brushed against Cortez.
To say that wasn't so in such a factual manner as an article, is very disappointing for the site. Say it may not have been intentional at most.
Corners are always complaining to ref's, why is it so relevent for this. Maidana's elbow accidental or not, was more dangerous and a worser offense.
Ok Khan maybe could have been deducted a point for holding, but Maidana was holding, grabbing and not being a saint in there either. So one point deduction just for the most serious offense seems more than enough for a bout. Otherwise the ref would be getting too involved in the fight, which ironically is what the author exactly tries to say was the case too much already.
Also in the case of clinches, you can make the argument Maidana was not having effective time or ability to land as he'd want. So it wasn't the worst thing to be broken up after a few seconds of no progress, and being given the opportunity in another exchange, rather than a stalemate. Think about it, is Maidana really making progress if the ref leaves them tangled together, Maidana throwing just his one free arm and missing or hitting Khan's guard. You can easily argue it would have been more of a waste of time and energy for Maidana.
People don't want to see people hitting and holding too much. Perhaps Cortez is especially hard on that but it's not the worst thing ever, and articles like this are a little disapointing.
everybody who knows boxing knows joe cortez is a complete and utter wanker. his reffing in hatton mayweather was ridiculous, mayweather was the better fighter by far but it still dont make it right. his reffing this weekend wasnt any better either. how the hell is he allowed to ref these fights?
Damn the excuses people are using to diminish Khan's victory are unbelievable. The only thing Cortez did wrong in the fight was take a point off Maidana for using his elbow. Other than that, he was doing Maidana a favour by breaking the fighters up every time Khan went to hold in the 10th.
Maidana failed...get over it.
Exactly
I think people are forgetting, the last 2 minutes of the 10th involved Khan being knocked around the ring constantly... the breaking up from Cortez did Khan no favours
Cortez was rubbish though, he was so inconsistent with the clinches.

This is a pretty gooder post. You should write articles for this website.
Just admit it folks, if Smoger was reffing, Khan would likely have lost.
Not taking anything from Khan, he had a great performance.
How?
Khan was completely outboxing him in the larger part of the fight
Cortez broke them up when Maidana was hitting the back of Khan's head
He took all the shots in the 10th, on the verge of going
If he'd gone down the fight would have been closer, but can't say he would have lost
If Maidana was a better finisher, there would have been far more chance of winning... he just isn't.
