Man, I said this in an earlier post in this thread about Floyd fans. Just like clockwork, they said it again not long after ....

Floyd fans had for the longest time been complaining that Manny should have fought AT A CATCH-WEIGHT with Morales, .... get this, FOR A TITLE FIGHT.

What made this one worse is that the title was for 130 yet Floyd fans wanted the fight at something like 132lbs

    Classic, just classic!

If that is not what you meant, no problem.....

but you still stated its like a catch-weight. So that was the confusion, I guess. If it's a title fight for 130, why do you even mention that "its like a catch-weight"?

          A 130 title has a limit of 130.

It will always matter to boxing historians, which means it will always count against him in the ATG lists.

Manny has yet to finish his career. Things can change for the better or the worse.

              Example:
              - If he loses to Margo, it would bring him down a notch.
              - If he fights and beats Floyd then retires, it definitely would not matter anymore nor discussed (that he fought Cotto at 1lb below his previous weight).

              - It may be mentioned by historians but it will still be a fact that Manny did what he did. Roy Jones Jr did not defeat the best HW but commentators call him the former HW champ. That's right, you beat Ruiz as your only HW fight and it is enough.

No it's not. The fact that Ruiz was not regarded as a top 3 Heavyweight at the time and was not a lineal champion means that that while being a great achievement, it is not regarded as comparable with Spinks or Charles being lineal champions. Roy is regarded as an ATG by boxing historians, but not generally as a top 50 ATG, precisely because of the weakness of his competition, including Ruiz, and because of the people he didn't fight. See here.

You are going in a different direction than I was with this. I believe that we both agree that Ruiz was not the top dog at HW and to have gained more it would have had to be against Lennox ... but my point is that even though he did it against Ruiz instead of Lennox, he still did get one of the HW belts so he will still be called a former HW champ.

So in that sense, having a HW title, instead of not having one, can't be counted against him.

Plus, I also stated in that post, Manny has yet to complete his career. If Manny were to fight and beat Floyd, then having fought at 145 against Cotto, would be irrelevant.

Beating Mayweather would certainly trump the Cotto and Marg catchweights, but wouldn't cancel them out completely. Longevity and overall record in a division does matter, and the fact those two fights are questionable means they won't count in his favour as much as they otherwise would have done - especially as Mayweather is generally regarded as a small Welterweight, and styles make fights..

The fact that Mayweather only fought one top tier Lightweight while he was campaigning at that weight is always mentioned by boxing historians when discussing his record, for instance.

I believe that beating Mayweather would take Pac well into the top 20 of the ATG list, but if it hadn't been for those catchweights, I think he'd have been in consideration for a top 10 place.

no it will not hurt his legacy, for one simple reason, pacquiao is an exciting fighter and gives the fans their moneys worth......... he delivers and comes through with the bottom line..... being worth his weight in gold in the entertainment department...........

if he was a lessor fighter, then yes because if you have special rules and end up being mediocre, you suck........ pacquiao isnt mediocre.
