The first video with margarito talking about handwraps is said to be before the cotto fight. wrong, it was after he got suspended a week after the mosley fight (that is why he is wearing shades.) at 3:15 it looks like an HBO pre fight interview the night of the fight. Margarito says "we had the adequate sparring, we had the adequate brass knuckles." yes, manopla in spanish translates to brass knuckles. Then it shows a video of his cutman asking him "how is the punch?" between round 8 and 9, margarito replies "i dont know." It also says that the cutman is the one who wrapped his hands. i am not sure if they reffer to capetillo or one of his other team members.
I just rewatched Cotto-Margarito

Excellent post sir, thank you for being objective and unbiased.Actually, that was in the second round. Cotto was on the right side of the ring, got hit with an uppercut and made him fold and then retreat. Margarito smirked, Cotto retreated to the bottom ropes, Margarito bent over, and the two started exchanging, and the war in round 2 broke out.
It's still an amazing fight to watch...
EDIT: It's a shame the fight is now a centerpiece for controversy. I personally don't know what to make of it. On one hand, it's generally assumed that when/if you get doing something wrong, it's usually not the first time, so that's where the su****ion of Margarito using it in the Cotto fight comes in.
On the other hand, Cotto's never had the best defense. When you look at power punches in his fights with Judah, Mosley, Margarito, Clottey, and even Pacquiao...you will see that they never go under 30% (if I'm not mistaken). He eats a lot of them, and when he ducks down to do infighting (earmuffs and bend in), uppercuts hurt more, and that is Margarito's specialty. Margarito doesn't throw punches like a magnum, but he's more akin to a wrecking ball, slowly but surely the damage adds up.
You look at the Pacquiao fight and Cotto looks pretty much the same as he did at the end of the Margarito fight. He isn't cut up as bad as in the Margarito fight, but in terms of swelling, his face doesn't look anything like it did at the start of his fight with Pacquiao.
I hope for boxing's sake we can put this aside and let each fighter take his respective course and hope these types of things don't happen again (handwraps controversy and all that).Comment

God.. what a tragedy..
Cotto came in so strong, on top of the world, with absolute confidence that nobody could beat him..
and round after round, i'm seeing Margarito land nothing strong, and nothing worse than cotto has ever seen.. yet, he's starting to break down unlike he ever has before.. his face is starting to tear and swell, and it doesn't make sense..
in the later rounds he just took punch after punch and tried to hang in there, but he was getting pummeled.. until finally he couldn't take anymore.
The great lion that cotto was died that night, and Margarito killed it with those loaded gloves.
I hope manny destroys this guy and forces him into retirement.
yeah those loaded gloves were loaded just enough to not KO Cotto
now that takes years of cheating to pull off lots of practice getting the cement mixture just right so no one suspects any cheating....:boobies:Comment

without the plaster cotto would've easily made it through 12 and won decision as i see it. your acting like the plaster was just a little bonus to margs power, no - that stuff killscotto has never been great at moving around the ring, he always has to set his feet to punch leaving brawl willing fighters like margarito a chance to land. we never seen cotto move for an entire fight or be under that kind of pressure neither, margarito set a high pace and cotto was theone forced to use up more energy. also margarito was smart enough to go to the body which cotto abandoned for some reason.
margarito probably wore plaster that night and if so that obviously played a part in what happened, but ppl need to stop blaiming everything on the possible use of plaster and acting like cotto would have won the fight had tony been clean. the truth is cotto fought a bad fight regardless, he got big headed and forgot what kind of boxing brought him to the top. bad strategy and stylistic matchup on cottos part is the reason he lost. plaster if used "just" made it more bloody, it ruined cotto but he lost the fight on his own due to a poor gameplan.Comment

1. Cotto doesn't clinchGod.. what a tragedy..

2. Cotto couldn't hurt Marg
3. Cotto wouldn't go to Marg's body
3. Margi kept swinging, setting a crazy pace.. cotto was forced to MOVE all 11 rounds because he doesn't clinch.
4. Cotto admires his work too much.. often times was caught with punches while trying to do his typical reset, or stroll around the ring (when he lands a punch, then tries to look cute and drop his gloves to bounce or walk around).
Fact is, margy is all wrong fo ra guy like cotto. Cotto has too many bad habbits he has to get rid of before he beats a guy like margi.
Needs to learn to clinch, for 1.. and needs to stop admiring his work and POSING as much as he does.. virtually everytime he got hit BIG by margi, were times he was posing.
edit - also want to add cotto from the second round on i believe was fighting with a busted nose that he kept picking with.Last edited by intoccabile; 10-15-2010, 11:40 PM.Comment
